You cant get the flu from the flu shot. The virus in the shot is dead. You can get symptoms from the shot that may feel flu like as your immune system cleans the dead virus out of your system and then creates antibodies against the virus, which is what protects you against the real flu virus down the road.
You dont make enough antibodies for at least 2 weeks to give you any protection against the flu.
So if you got the flu in 4 days after the shot, you didnt get the shot soon enough to be of any help. You would have needed to get the shot about a month ago.

I have never taken the flu shot, and rarely get the flu. I normally work outside in the winter also here in New England.

MrChicken is right. I always heard that you get the symptoms of the flu after you take the shot. So I figured why take the risk of suffering through the symptoms if there is a chance I wouldn't get the flu at all without the shot.

According to my sources, Flu vaccine will be in short supply this year, and they're (the people who brought you the swine flu snafu) are suggesting only health care workers, the elderly, children & those with chronic illnesses be vaccinated, due to supply problems. I'm told we're to expect late this fall, or early winter for our supply.

I've administered gallons of the stuff and usually get one, but have mixed feelings about the vaccination program.

Toolgirl, I felt that way until I caght the flu for real. Not a cold that I always thought was the flu. Colds I could fight through. The year I got the flu I couldnt even stand up for 3 days, and felt like crap for about three weeks, there was mucho vomiting and really high fever, and cramps for days on end. I used to wonder how 20,000 people died of the flu every year, well when I found out what the real flu was like, I kne how they died.

My recommendation, get the shot, it's cheap and a little fever and a crappy feeling is nothing compared to the real thing.

I've been getting a flu shot the last few years because I spend so much time with kids who always get sick and then with my 73 year old mother. I don't want to get the real flu that MrChicken is talking about because I had it once a few years ago and I could not believe how awful it was and I ESPECIALLY don't want to take a chance on getting it and giving it to my Mom. I hear it's going to be difficult or late getting it this year.

People get the flu if they don't eat right..like not getting enough protein to keep the immune system strong.

The last time I got the flu was when I was a kid...and that was 12-15 years ago.

I dunno, it's kinda funny. I tend to get sick at least twice a year - once during the fall/winter and then some other time during the year.
But I don't think I'ver ever gotten the flu. Just a bad cold or bronchitis. Somehow I'd rather take a cold than the flu though :)
