Not in the last two years and I'm running the dreaded IBM GXP75 in my surfing machine.

Had one WD go flaky on me about 4-5 monthes ago. It kept losing it's functional status any time the computer was off more than 5 minutes. The raid 5 configuration would rebuild which took hours, first time I thought nothing of it then notice it would always go out after a power down. I went out and bought a new drive and hasn't happened since. RMA'ed the bad drive and now I got a hot-spare.

Had a maxtor also fail, this was after the first time I left that computer off over night. Went to power up and it went clunk, clunk, clunk. I'm afraid to turn any computer off now.

I lost a 13.5 gb ibm 22gxp, it just wouldn't spin up unless the drive was shook, it was rma'd and replaced with a 15gb 75gxp which was sold :)

None. I just try to always keep them cooled somehow and try not to demand too much from them.

Quantum Fireball LM, AS, WD 120SE, Maxtor whatever, all no problems.

Now to go knock on some wood.

I only use WDs and I've had about 5 of them in the last 3 years. 2 have died just before the 3-year warranty so I'm still a happy customer with the free new replacements.

I know the failure rate isn't good for this scenario, but I back everything up.
