I'm a student at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and was wondering how many people have heard of the major I am currently studying in.

what is it?

working with nano technology?

working with miniaturized components? (like a micron level simple machines?)

Basically it's all about IC manufacturing, technology and applications. Everything from simple devices to MEMS and GaAs devices. We actually have our own fab where we build our own devices. I find it to be extremely fascinating, but not too many people know about it.

Backhome in my country (malaysia) microelectronic is one hot major offered in university ... yes, we also have computer sci, computer eng, and electrical eng .. and we have major in IT.

Everybody here raves about their Athlon's and P4's but who actually knows how to build one? That's what I find to truly interesting.

That Sedra-Smith book was used in my introductory Electronics class. I agree it is a good book, but is more Electrical Engineering than not. I did learn a lot from that book. MicroE is a lot of semiconductor device physics and device processing. So you not only know how to build a transistor from raw silicon (ie sand) up through packaging, you know how the darn thing works! We even work with MEMS. Little tiny machines that are the size of a simple IC. Fascinating stuff.

Check out MicroE at RIT
