About 15 minutes for me, YMMV based on disc read/decryption/HD write speeds.

do you rip the dvds because you are paranoid the discs will fail or for some othe rreason?

Column A + multiple Column Bs:
A: Optical media is physically much more fragile than magnetic.
B1: With all my movies on a central server, I can play anything I want from any device on the network without having to juggle discs.
B2: By ripping them to a server, I can remove all the promos/menus/extras (hereafter referred to as "Useless Crap") from the disc, and be left with just the pure movie.
B3: Because I can. :D

My cheap 7 year old computer at home (Win95) has 20 Gigabites.
That's all
Do I get a prize for lowest GB?
(my previous computer had ONE GB)

Dont worry - Getting a new technically-literate-boyfriend-approved one soon.

Forgot about my 360, guess that's 600GB for me. :p

(Total Space) from all machines.

I will be adding screen shot of mine later:

Workstation: 4 x 80Gb (striped) 320Gb
Server: 5 x 500Gb (Raid5) 2500Gb or 2.5TB (2Tb usable)
HTPC: 2 x 500Gb (no Raid) 1000Gb or 1Tb
Laptop: 1 x 60Gb (no raid) 60Gb

Total 3880Gb or 3.8Tb

BTW about 2.7Tb in use or 1.1Tb of usable space left!

Are you counting external hard drives, disks (1.4 MBs at a time add up), flash memory and such?

NEED? That is so over-rated :) Seriously, need does not come to mind when you talk about computer anything.

Eh, too lazy to count it up down to the last byte, but probably somewhere in the 3TB range, not counting around 1.5TB unused.
