Im thinking about getting road runner cable internet service in NYC. Ive heard horror stories but also quite a number of satisfied customers. Please include what your average down/up speeds are and any problems with the installation. Also, does road runner offer a self install kit?

Especially if any of you are from Queens, NY...Please post a response.

I love RR. Speeds are good but they depend on how many users are on your line. I am in Ohio so your expeirence may difer. Only problem I have is sometimes the modem appears to lock up. Its an easy fix, shut down computers and unplug modem. Plug the modem back in and boot up. This happens about once every month or two. There is no software needed. Its just adjusting your network settings. Hope this helps :)

I live in Hawaii, and in my area we are using the new Docsys (spelling) modems. D/L speed depends on where you D/L from, but on fast sites I usually am in the 250-300 range. Have not uploaded.

I'm in California and my experience has been very good. My RR also is DOCSIS, and I'm able to upload at around 274kb, and download at an average around 1.5mb. Of course, this could be due to my neigborhood, there aren't many cable modem users on my block, probably at most there's 10. When I first signed up for it, around 2 months ago, I was the only one.. :D

I live in the Washington Heights/Bronx area, and RR is pretty good in my area. DU Meter reports downloads consistently in the 250-300kBps range. Uploads are so so, averaging 30-50kBps. The cable guy that installed the modem claimed that there were less than 100 ppl on my node, which is designed for up to 500 users.

Right now i have verizon dsl, and i doubt anything can be worse than that :)

Hmmmm, i'm from Queens. Anyways I had maybe a problem or 2, but that shut down and disconnect modem crap always seems to work, I'm guessing you live in Queens, right?

Peace,
Nore

PS: They won't let you self-Install, and if you have Windows ME, they'll tell you to downgrade it or to go to hell, hehe.

Hehehe, am I the only one that gets 3500Kbps????

Heh, even better for me.

Peace,
Nore

PS: RR ain't that bad, the only annoying thing is when the modem turns off and you have to reset it.

Cox@RR here in northern Virginia. It's been pretty solid for over a year now. And it works flawlessly with Win2K, WinME, Linux (currently Mandrake 7.2), and BeOS 5.03 Personal.

I live in Queens and have RR for about 3 or 4 months. It's great!! I will NEVER go back to dial-up. Belive me it's fast, I can download 100mb in about 15 minutes. I have two IP Addresses and I'm running a server with Unreal Tournament 24 hours a day with no problems. I had to call tech support once and they were very helpful in fixing my problem.:D

It hasn't been too bad. They've seemed to have some bad spells where my in-game pings were awful, but things always settle back down to normal after a couple of weeks.

I have road running in Hawaii...it's been super suck for the past 2 months, buy they just installed more circuits to the mainland and it seems pretty fast again.

Fastest download I've seen thus far is about 450KB/S to the mainland.
Local around 600KB/S.

Uploads seem to be capped somewhere around 35KB/S.
