Poll: How important is having a completely silent PC to you? How much MHz would you give up??

How many of you would be willing to sacrifice processing speed for a totally quiet (or whisper quiet) system?? I have a Duron 800 @ 933MHz with a Taisol fan installed. The processor fan is a bit buzzy, but nothing that distracts me. To tell you the truth, my Pioneer 106S is actually louder when it spins up (sounds like a damn jet engine:|)

But I personally wouldn't give up any serious MHz to have a quiet system. Once you get used to fans, you kinda miss 'em ;)

So I ask, how much MHz (if any) would you be willing to give up for a totally quiet PC?

400 or more.

I would rather have a silent 1 GHz machine than a noisy 1.4 GHz machine.

I'll see when I get done with my project, The key is going to be adjustability. my processor only goes 1.2, well, i guess that is pretty damn fast, but I am going to go for prefectly silent at 1Ghz.

Right now quite a bit because it's in my bedroom....

At some point when I live in more than one room I won't care so much....

30-35 dbA or so is fine with me (that's a YS Tech 26CFM fan), but the Delta 45dbA 7k rpm is just too much...

But when I'm trying to sleep I need silence...even a YS Tech is too loud.

The funny thing is that I "personally" can sleep with just about any noise. I can sleep with the TV on so I can go sleep with the PC on :D

i have 12 fans in my case and it's in my bedroom. when they're off, it's *deathly* silent in the room, and i freak out. plus, they help me sleep. i have a fanbus installed so i can lower the fan speed a little during the day to make it more bearable for company, but when bedtime comes, or if it's hot outside, it's full steam ahead! so i guess what i'm saying is i wouldn't give up any speed because noise doesn't bother me (especially when i can somewhat control it)

They are alright once you get used to it I guess. I remember the first time when I installed 7 fans on my system and they seemed extremely loud compared to the "normal" PCs in the office. Now I am used to it at home and kind of thing that the PC in the office is not even switched on ^^

I would give up around 133-200 MHz. My Athlon system is running at 1200MHz (1.6V) cooled by an Alpha PAL6035 w/ a quiet Adda fan.

Absolutely NONE. I'm running several Athlon systems with cases pushing 400+CFM (in close proximity) and I wouldn't trade them for slower machines that were silent. No way. That's just laughable.

Of course, that's just my opinion :)

None, but then again I'm using stock cooling so its pretty damn quiet and my MP3's drown out the little noise.

I sacrificed 50 MHz to install a smaller and more silent Vent on my Alpha PEP66 Cooler...now it's a computer again and no hairdryer anymore... :)

Me too. However, I draw the line at Deltas.

Well, right now I am running open case, with a 22" Box fan turned on high, not to mention the 3 fans in my case. It is pretty loud, but my music drowns it out. So, my answer is, I don't give a damn about the noise my computer makes. (well at least fan noise)

minimum 1ghz. thats all i require. although im going smp now, so it really doesnt matter. is it possible to have a passive cooling 933 p3's side by side? probably not, cuz then u need a fan for the scsi drive..

lupin, I know - I had the exact same problem, one drive had noisier bearings than the other (both the same model drive) - I ended up replacing the drive, the noise was irritating beyond belief, and my drives are only 5400rpm models. I don't think I could stand a 7200rpm model.

Actually, fan noise is a major factor why I will be going over to Athlon4 (along with SSE1 compatability), even the quieter Coolermaster fan I'm using on the FOP32 is making too much noise for my tastes.

I wouldn't give up any!

Noise never bothered me.

Even if I went to sleep, because I like noise when i go to sleep (or a whirring sound)

Usually I go to bed with my fan set on high (ceiling fan)

So, I'd probably enjoy sleeping next to a noisy computer... :)

I already run my laptop at 500 MHz instead of 600, because that way the fan comes on much less often.

If I could run my Celly 880 at 400 and shut off the fans, I'd do it when guests came over, since the PC is in the guest bedroom. I'd like to keep cracking OGR, but when they're over I shut the machine down.
