[POLL] - How do you do your taxes?

Just curious.

We always used TurboTax but then switched to TaxCut a few years back. Will use TC again this year.

This thread can be used for a poll only. Tax questions should be placed in the Tax Thread

I have some fairly unusual circumstances that never allow me to use a tax program, and have to do it myself each year.

Taxcut, been using it for the past 5 years. I used TurboTax before that, but it costs more and I'm a cheap bastard 🙂.

I just use HR Block online. I don't install any software and can always go back and easily look at past returns.

I don't see a POLL option for it though 🙂

I fill it out on paper, the compare with online turbotax. If turbotax finds a higher refund than I did on paper, I pay for the turbotax that year 🙂

When I could use the EZ form, I did them manually. But now, its more complicated and requires the full 1040, plus several others. Thus, I use the Online H&R Block program now. Usually works fairly well and e-files very quickly.

I do my own taxes, and my fiancee's, and her sister's taxes, and my parents, and my sister and her boyfriend, and a few of my friends. I had to draw a line when friend's parents started asking. I am an accountant, audit to be specific; people automatically assume just because you are an accountant by day, you love to do taxes at night. This year, I am doing my taxes for family only (including my fiancee). No friends!!! Not even for a fee.

Anyways, after the vent.....I do taxes manually by paper. I'm more comfortable doing it this way.

I give it all to a local accounting firm that charges me too much. In my experience, CPAs are unreliable in complicated tax scenarios and can't seem to provide clear answers.

I have a personal accountant. I have lots of deductions, additional forms and multiple income streams.
I don't trust myself with filing my own taxes anymore.

I used to buy and use Tax Act software. Now I just use one of the online versions that is free if you are below a certain AGI amount. I encourage everyone who is eligible to do the same.

Aren't you an accountant?

I make my own workpapers in Excel and complete my forms by hand. Based on my professional experience, I have an innate distrust of tax software for anything but the most basic filing scenarios.

Nosir. You might think that because I probably spoke of the work I've done with some of the Big 4s on their accounting software (namely for Sarbanes Oxley). I used to do my own taxes, but it's become far too complicated for me to manage.
