Just threw mine in the dishwasher a couple of weeks ago... but after that, i needed to soak it in the tub for a bit to get all the detergent and whatnot out.

I'll have a friend hold my keyboard upside down and I'll whack the hell out of it. It gets quite a bit of icky stuff out. Food debris, dead skin flakes, hair and what not. I have a Microsoft Natural Elite keyboard I really like, so I'll probably take it apart in a few month and do a thorough clean up, which I do about once every six month with an expensive keyboards or keyboards I particularly love.

To do thorough clean up, I take a pic with digital camera, and pop off every keys with a coin or screwdriver. All the keys get washed in a jar and all the plastic parts gets washed in kitchen sink. I don't usually have to use the picture anymore, because I usually know what goes where.

just cleaned it out once after spilling a half bottle of beer in it

but after that, never. That is what constantly feeds me with bacteria and the like resulting in me being almost resistant to most colds that go around

I just pick it up, flip it over and drop it from 40-50cm onto the desk. I repeat that about 5-6 times and it comes out clean....you won't believe the kind of stuff that gets left over on the desk after..........ech...

Depends on the type of keyboard. The old Model M types you could just pop the keys off and clean everything manually. Newer ones you can't get into them to clean as much, but it is still possible. Currently, I am at a loss as to how to clean my laptop keyboard as I don't see how to safely remove it. :(

IBM Model M clone here (UNICOMP USB), I can just pop the key covers off and soak them in a cup of soap and water if needed. Then, use my knife to pull anything out from under the keys in the actual keyboard.
