both long balls Ward caught were easy catches - yes, he's a good player, but that was hardly the stuff of super bowl legends

is this the closest we've ever come to agreeing about a sporting event?

Hines Ward is a great player, unlike some other SuperBowl MVPs.....

completely agree, my example in the OP clearly says that.

however, he was unimpressive in this game.

steelers didn't TAKE this game from the seahawks, the hawks GAVE it away (well with some help from the refs. 😉 )

I agree totally, the refs gave away 7 pts, and potentially 14 other points. I wonder how many steelers fans paid them off...

The entire team did what they needed to do, no one player really stood out or needed to stand out. Now there are players who "lost" their chance at MVP such as Ben because of his pick retruned 76 yards and an eventual score, but for the most part it was indeed a team effort. Other close calls would be Ike Taylor who should have had a 2nd pick (that would have been his first in the game) really early in the game when Hasselbeck threw into tripple coverage and the ball hit him right in the hands. If he did get that pick it would have been two daggars by one player and he probably would have been MVP, but instead they had to give it to the one player who had the best overall game without the obvious glares. Hines Ward's stats might not look that impressive, but he did have that crucial 3rd and 28 completion catch (which wasn't an easy one) as well as several other key catches (all 5 of his were pretty crucial) including that long TD which was probably his easiest.

I'm happy for Hines and his Steeler teammates. I know him very well. We grew up together. Great person and great player.

Dont get me wrong, I dont have a problem with Ward being the MVP...
He made 123 yards of catches with 1 TD.

43 yards and 0 TD's is not an MVP performance.

Which I thought was strange. Didn't he play for Michigan?

I think Big Ben deserved it. He didn't have killer stats, but he was playing all out football. He was throwing himself around for 1st downs all game and besides that 1 pick on the 2 yards line, I'd say he was pretty solid. Yeah, I was suprised that Ward got the MVP, but it's not the 1st time I've been suprised by their selection. Like Hammerhead said, Howard shouldn't have gotten it in '97.

Big Ben was 9 for 21 with 123 yards, 0 TD passes, and 2 INTs. He had 7 rushes for 25 yards and 1 TD. His performance was not MVP worthy. Ward was by far the best performer in the game. He made the big catches when he had to.

You have to realize that a majority of the people at the Super Bowl aren't from the city it's being played in.

Gardocki should have been MVP. He was the reason PItt was still in the game after the first half- he was flawless the whole game.
