POLL: HD-DVDs

So, we all know that by this time next year, HD-DVD Players and HD-DVDs will be on the market. In fact, many of us will probably be in the process (yet again) of replacing a player with another. The more $$$ question, will you replace your entire DVD collection with the new and better "HD" versions?

I would not replace ALL, but I would replace some...

1) Band of Brothers
2) Original Star Wars Trilogy
3) Saving Private Ryan
4) Black Hawk Down
5) Man on Fire

Just to name a few. I personally don't look forward to the process...and can't believe the consumers of America are so willing to bend over and buy their collection all over again.

my screen is small enough (30" wide Sony CRT) to not upgrade to an HD-DVD player when 480p looks so damn good 🙂 (1080i cable IS jaw-dropping though)

It will all come done to one thing....

which media ships the nastiest, filthiest, most engrossing, most superiority-complex-feeding, most assidiously produced, and downright most degrating porn:thumbsup:

I don't have a HDTV, so DVDs are fine. I might buy the Star Wars Trilogys again when they come out on HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and maybe a few other things. The rest I'll keep the DVD that I have now.

I don't have an HDTV, but I don't think I'd replace any of my DVDs even if I did. The reason I don't have an HDTV is because that sort of stuff just doesn't matter as much to me. I care more about the content than the picture quality (to an extent, of course). My favorite DVD(s) in my collection are my Band of Brothers set - ain't no way I'm paying $80+ to upgrade it!

Maybe really really good movies like Sneakers, Real Genius, The Dawn of the Dead remake... But that'll have to wait until I buy an HDTV. Considering all the variables in choosing one (it may or may not support 1080i, 1080p, 720i, 720p, HDMI, DVI, Plasma, LCD, CRT, DLP, some other things I forget), the only reason I'll buy one in a few years is when they switch OTA signals into completly digital. I haven't paid for cable since 1998, so I only watch stuff broadcast locally. Since my tv doesn't have a digital tuner, I've been told it would cost $200+ for some type of converter box, so when analogue is gone, I might as well kick in a couple extra hundred or so to get an HDTV with a built in digital tuner. Hopefully, buy that time, the stuff like multiple resolution support, the DVI/HDMI stuff will be straightened out and I won't have such a headache in getting a tv which will be compatible with a bunch of different technologies for the next few years.

I've stopped buying DVDs, I just rent from netflix, so anything recent I like will be buying for the first time not replacing.

Some movies are just going to be sweeter in 1080i, since it will have over 4 times the resolution. I'm pretty sure I'll be replacing my copy of the first Matrix movie, and finally buying most of the Pixar movies.

I don't know much about the 2nd and 3rd movies you mentioned, but Sneakers doesn't seem like a movie that'd be worth upgrading... It's a great movie, yes, but if anything I'd think epics and war movies would be the ones worth upgrading... movies where the visuals are a big part of what makes the movie great.

I think I'll wait to see what kind of real world quality differences there are before really deciding.

If it's a good boost, I'll replace movies that I know I'll watch several times, and also ones that are more "visually appealing" than others.
Example: I'd replace The Fifth Element before I replace When Harry Met Sally 😉

True dat. Except that I already have the 1080p version

Deinterlaced from 1080i but still divine😉

agreed

probably wait for a while, then sales. i stopped buying dvds over a year ago..or maybe almost 2 years since they announced the hd formats since i just knew any dvd now will be rereleased in hd soon enough, and why spend money on an obsolete format. no getting double dipped for me. no loss either since netflix keeps me happy enough. hd will last a few decades probably going by the history of tv.

Hmm...I should start picking up some HD-DVDs over here. I haven't checked the prices but I bet they're no more than $2-3 apiece! 😀

If it weren't for the pollution I'd consider moving here (well, my girls might have an issue with living in Shanghai.)

i will wait for HDDVD burners... and take all my tv series.. and put each season on 1-2 HD-DVD's. heh.. well.. that's what I'd like to do, but mucking around w/ menus is highly unlikely.

*Shrug* Are they movies you're likely to even find in the top 100? No. But they're may favorites. Sure I enjoy stuff like Lord of the Rings or the Godfather, but they're much lower on my list of stuff I might consider replacing. It has to be something I really dig to be willing to spend $$$ on buying it a second time.

Blu Ray has just about every studio supporting it while HDDVD has about half.

So no, I won't buy any HD-DVDs, ever.

no, at least not at the start. id have to wait and see how the format does before making that purchase. even though it may be better than a standard dvd in many ways, its too soon after the dvd-era. i mean, i expect a good number of techies and such to adopt the latest and greatest but if average joe-six-pack doesnt warm up to the technology then i truly believe we'll have the laserdisc situation on our hands again. yes it was popular amongst a few, but in the grand scheme of things people werent quite ready to ditch vhs yet regardless of the quality or extras.

so ill wait and see how it goes before moving forward. especially since the blu-ray and hd-dvd formats will be duking it out at the start anyways.
