This is something I have wondered about for a long time. A friend took a lot of photography and journalism classes years ago. He took some photos for a project that another friend of mine was doing. I volunteered a camera for his use that belonged to my grandfather. It had Zeiss lenses.
He scoffed at this, saying that he had never heard of them, and that if HE hadn't, then they couldn't be any good. My shock at his comments later served to dull the shock when he insisted on taking the group photos with the Sun directly behind the group of people being photographed.
I advised him against this, but he swore he knew what he was doing. They turned out like crap.
