POLL: Have You Heard Of Zeiss Lenses?

This is something I have wondered about for a long time. A friend took a lot of photography and journalism classes years ago. He took some photos for a project that another friend of mine was doing. I volunteered a camera for his use that belonged to my grandfather. It had Zeiss lenses.

He scoffed at this, saying that he had never heard of them, and that if HE hadn't, then they couldn't be any good. My shock at his comments later served to dull the shock when he insisted on taking the group photos with the Sun directly behind the group of people being photographed.

I advised him against this, but he swore he knew what he was doing. They turned out like crap.

Yup. Used to make interferometers (well I worked on the software for em) that measured them for Carl.

Deep UV lithography and such. Also - having said that, I can't adequately answer your poll.

I used to sell Zeiss microscopes, so yes, I've heard of them. :)

Who? Don't you mean Leica? :) And that may be true in photography, but not really in microscopy.

it sounds like your friend is not as knowing as he thinks. Zeiss makes some great products.

Zeiss has only been making high quality/advanced optics for the last 120 years or so.

Expensive but great stuff.

Yep, I've heard of them... they make expensive camera lenses that I'm too cheap to buy, right? :)

Yep, I've heard of them, both within the context of photography and other optics (binoculars, scopes, lab equipment). I will likely buy a CZ lens sometime within the next year or so for my Sony camera -- the "consumer" one, the 16-80mm at a cost of about $650. The other three CZ lenses currently out for the Sony line are over $1000.

I think I recall reading about Carlos Norman Hatchcock II using a Zeiss scope on a Browning M2HB when using the thing to snipe NVA and Viet Cong from a hilltop.

EDIT: Added another poll option.

Yep, and that's what led to the purpose built .50 BMG sniper rifles of today.

The NVA/VC probably couldn't get in close enough to even have a chance at him with anything other than field artillery. :p

edit: oops...might have been an Unertl instead of a Zeiss

I've used survey-grade equipment with Zeiss optical components..... its definitely not "cheap" and MOST CERTAINLY NOT a no-name brand.
