I guess this poll would be for non-subscribers only. If you have clicked on an ad, please tell me which one. I'm just wondering what the efficiency of these ads are and how much they probably pay for them and whether or not they're worth it. Any ideas?

For example: of the 105,000 users on AT, how many do you think have clicked on the "Thomas Kincade's First Santa" ad and how much you think they paid for that? It seems sort of out of place in a tech forum.

I think if you remember the ad good enough to make a post about it, then it served its purpose.

I didn't remember it. I just looked at the top of my screen while I was making the post.

Well it still served its purpose. ;)
But to answer your question, yes. I think I clicked on a couple before I became a subscriber. Not many though.

So what is the point of AT banner ads in particular then? Do you think that this really reinforces name recognition? How many companies with ads on AT can you recall that are no longer in circulation on AT. For instance, I can recall the one that was flashing "You are a winner!" in bright white and red, but I don't remember what it was for even though it wasn't too long ago. And in a couple months, I probably won't remember Tomas Kincaide's First Santa. I would think that the purpose of these ads in particular is to click through them and purchase stuff or obtain more info.

A couple years ago I used to click the ads on site's that I found helpful and deserved it. Now I don't bother, I'm tired of ads, not enough to pay for them to go away however.

I try to remember to click on one or two ads every time I visit the site.
I clicked on the MSI ad.

The reason you don't remember what company had the "YOU ARE A WINNER!!" flashing banner, is because they don't understand how to advertise. If you'll notice the advertising that succesful companies use, the primary purpose of it is, like you said, name recognition. Whether I remember the ads that were at the top of this page or not is irrelevant, it only matters if I remember the name of the comapny. Has ATI ever advertised on AT? I dunno, they could have, I don't remember. But, I do remember thier name, it doesn't matter if I remember where I saw it.

Banner ads on the internet have always had extremely popr click through rates. That's jsut not how advertising works. TV Commercials, Radio commercials, Billboards, none of them expect you to run out to the store after seeing them, and it shouldn't be expected on the ineternet either. Companies that actually are expecting click throughs leading to sales to supply them w/ revenue are propbably not doing extremely well. Who do you think is doing more business, the "CLICK HERE TO WIN!!" company, or Crucial, whose ad is also at the top of the page, w/ a price, but no urge to "CLICK HERE NOW!"?

I wanted to know what the heck that santa ad was doing there a little while back. So I clicked it, then the Crucial and Muskin ones by mistake.

I used to, a lot. One night I must have clicked on them 100 times, but I wasn't actually interested in any of their products. Just doing my part to get their click-through stats up.

The big ad at the top of the page that comes from network.realmedia.com often loads REALLY slow, so I told Mozilla to block images from that server, and AT loads faster for me now. Otherwise, I tend to ignore ads unless they do that stupid flashing red thing, or do like the ad that shakes a bit to get your attention. I've never intentionally clicked on an ad banner.
