Paperback. Cheaper, more portable, and finally, lighter and thus easier to read. Virtually my entire library is paperback, with only a handful of hard covers.

fiction or things that will get a single reading in paperback
reference materials, things that i will look at more than once in hardcover

You are thinking of softcover, hardcover are harder to hold with one hand while the other one is busy :p

Whichever I find used. If I can get a hardcover for $5 or less then thats what I buy but I have no problem with paperback either.
