A good revolver for shooting fun. Much more powerful, easier to keep empties for reloading and less felt recoil for longer shooting time.
An auto for concealed carry. Hi-cap autos are fun to blast away with.

Hard to get a magnum round in an auto but for that cheap junk from israel (see pock marks on the casting now).. Plus six shooters are 100% in mud, rain or shine.. Having said that I don't own one because they are unweildy both in target re-aquistion and size.

A family member of mine owns a gunshop, and he always recommends a revolver for beginner shooters. Is that mainly because they require less maintenance, or is there another reason a revolver would be better for a beginner?
I've been thinking about taking up shooting as a hobby... need to do so many other things first though =)

Hahahahaha.... have you ever shot a pistol before?
For the purposes of this comparison, I'm going to ignore major mechanical failures of the gun inself. Lets look at what can go wrong with an automatic:
-Problem: cartridge fails to fire after trigger pull, whether from the gun failing to work correctly, or from the cartridge being defective. Solution: pull the slide back, chamber next round. The solution takes time, you lose your sight picture.
-Problem: cartridge fails to extract from chamber at all. Solution: Hope you have small fingers and nice, long fingernails. The solution takes a while, you have to take your eyes off the target, total loss of sight picture.
-Problem: cartridge fails to eject completely. Solution: manually remove the casing. Again, takes time, and your attention. Like the above, it also requires you to lose your shooting stance.
-Problem: Failure to feed. Best case Solution: Work the slide. You might not have to take your eyes off the target.
-Problem: Failure to feed. Worst case Solution: The magazine got screwed up, you need to insert a fresh magazine, and get a round into the chamber.
-Problem: Your last shot failed to cycle the action (this happens sometimes when the load is too weak to get the job done... and this can happen from a factory fsck-up in just about any given load). Solution: Work the slide back.
There are a few more problems that can arise with an auto. Just about all of them make you lose any chance at quick shot after fixing the problem. Lets look at the problems that arise with a revolver:
-Problem: Cartridge fails to go off. Solution: pull the trigger again. You should still have a good sight picture.
Thats about all the possible problems you can have with a revolver, excluding major mechanical failures.
Now, myself, I am a fan of automatics, and they are definitely more reliable in function than they used to be, but they are not as rock solid as a revolver. Plus, lets face it, if it takes you more than 6 rounds to get the job done, you really should have a long gun anyway, not a pistol (unless, say, you have a Glock 18 and several 30+ round magazines).
I prefer an automatic, but you can make a case for revolvers when you need a gun that wont fail on you. Unless you want an auto that costs $2,000+, is almost the size of an MP5 PDW, and heavy as a mofo. The new HK Mk. 23's are nice for accurate, extremely reliable shooting, but they have more than one disadvantage.

Size isn't an issue. The smallest pistols are revolvers. Look at North American Arms revolvers. Like 4" long, 1 1/2" tall, 4oz or so. So they don't have to be huge.
I think I'm more of a revolver guy at heart, although I have more semi-autos. Revolvers are just more fun to shoot. I'd take a Vaquero or SAA over the newer fancy stuff.

Eh, I don't know. It's all personal preference and what you're using it for. I don't have any handguns anymore although I've been meaning to get one again for quite some time. My old .357 (single action even :Q ) was loads of fun to shoot. On the other hand nothing's better than a good old .45 sometimes 
If I was going self defense though I'd go revolver. If you can't hit the burglar breaking into your house with six shots you're fvcked anyway.

i beleive it fired a .458 caliber round. not entirely sure on that. may have been a .454... but that makes me think of the cassull.... (sp? dont use em, dont know much about em).

The reason that I perfer a semi-auto is that they tend to have better grip designs. Go with what's more comfortable to hold.

Actually you can have a third party randomly load blank and live round into the magazine...
