Just another dang annoying poll.

Of ye college people,

Fraternity,
Sorority,
GDI (Gosh Dang Independant)

Myself? I am a Tau (Alpha Tau Omega). Most fun thing I ever did, but nearly drank myself to death. I can sum it up with this one experience, and yes it is true. One time at IUP, woke up in Penn State 200 miles away, and the only thing I could think was 'Where the hell am i?' OYE, What a day! Still no recollection of how I got there. Thats good college dollars spent.

Of course, I didn't get hangovers then. Owww...

I didn't get to have any fun in college.... Guess I was GDI. Methinks the sorority chicks would not have accepted me, anyway. I think they had rules against letting girls like me join. :D

I did make straight A's but that was probably cause I majored in psychology with a minor in sociology. ;) :D Yes, I took the easy way.

Grad school (MA in Counseling Ed) looks pretty easy, too. Just more money to spend and hoops to jump through... but crikey, 60 more credit hours????? :( :( :(

In my opinion, Greek life depends on the college/univ. I went to Michigan (ann arbor) for a few years and the Greek life out there is sooooo lame! Many of the kids in the frats/soroities were complete tools or just flat-out fakers (there were some cool kids, though).

I've been to frats at other schools though and it's way better, maybe it's just at U-M. No offense Wolverines, it's a great school which everyone in my family attended (and was thrilled to hear of my decision not to return my junior year)...but a lot of the kids there have SERIOUS attitude problems.

Just my opinion!

Sorry about the double post, I really don't know how I did it. This was my first attempt at using the 'poll' feature. Again, profusely sorry. Accidental "nef".

Hmmmm.....well I never wanted to be in a sorority....but I had plenty of friends that wanted me to be....so even though I was GDI....I was not kicking and screaming. I went to frat-parties all the time...and dated a few fratboys too. Mostly...I was there for the free beer. I knew how to play the players and get outta there without doing anything I didn't want to. And there were sooooo many frat and non-frat parties going on all the time....he11, I just had a fscking blast. Okay....maybe too much of blast. College life was fun....but college in the education sense was just not my cuppa tea.:)

Oh...and the Alpha Tau Omegas at my school were cool Bone.:D

I don't see the point in pledging a frat, unless you had already known the brothers beforehand. I see it as paying to have friends. I have no problems with people in one, as I'm friends with many of the brothers, it's just not the thing for me.

That sounds cool. :) I would have liked to have had friends like that, 'specially on an athletic team. Do you still play sometimes?

Toolgirl,

can't really blame you. the sororities did the worst, and most vicious, hazing when I was in college.

The hazing wasn't bad in my fraternity, in some ways it was even positive. When ever we screwed up individually or as a group, we pledges had to do push-ups, sit-ups, and jog laps...

In a way, it was kinda like boot camp, except with lots of beer!

Crysla, glad to hear Tau's were cool at your school. I can't think of a more fun time that I had in school.

Oh, and 'DaboneHead' is play on my fraternity nick-name, someone in anandtech had already taken 'Dabone', 'Dabone69', and 'Dabone1969', so in desparation, I said Fvck it, no one will have taken dabonehead.... :p

hey Isla... :) nope, unfortunately i haven't picked up my stick since i graduated (2 years ago.) if my work condition gets better, i may try and look for those alumni club teams and join up -- kind of like an "after-work-activity".

but it was absolutely fun. it's great to be in a team and eventhough our main goal was to win, we had a lot of good times partying, having fun during practice, and drinking lots of watered-down beer (so our team didn't have a lotta money!) ;) our coach was great too-- he brought some cheap-canned-beer to practice once and offered it to whoever wanted... it was the best scrimmage i've ever played! :)

prodigy,

I did know guys before I joined, but if you meet people that you like in a house, that you might get along with, you'll eventually become friends. You don't pay to have friends, it's more you pay to do fun things with your friends. I know I will know the friends that I have, I will have them for a long time. If I was paying for my friends, wouldn't logic dictate that after I graduate, I wouldn't keep in contact with them, because none of us were paying to be part of the house anymore?

late.

Peacock,

I agree. I paid something like 700$ a semester, but almost all that money either went to the national chapter, or to our two houses (we had one we lived in, one we partied in).

It's like anything you join, you pay dues. Whether you are getting a CD every month, or getting free admission to greek parties.

One thing I will warn. My qpa dropped 1.5 points my pledging semester, and it was a long time before I learned how to party and go to class. Just a heads-up for those of you who would'nt think of losing that "cum laude" honor when graduating... It is tough to study, have a job, and party ur ass off at the same time... and guess which one usually gets ignored!

Greeks are chumps........comparing to 5 years of service in the USMC. My hazing lasted 10 months and it's call bootcamp, MCT and Engineer School. Those frat houses are just not good enough for me & I can kick most of thier ass. As for partying, they're not even close.

DaBonehead, were you an ATO at IUP, or just visiting there? What year did you graduate?
