POLL: Glide vs. Direct3D vs. OpenGL

Just for the hell of it; On what rendering engine do you think future 3D games will be based on? Glide? Direct3D (D3D)? or OpenGL? Also, do you feel that MS's DirectX influences any of the games in any way? Do we really need DirectX in future games?
 
OPEN GL for sure. As long that Windows is the only PC-Game Platform, DirectX will always exist, and now with the X-Box even longer. But when Linux will become maybe in 5 years a competitor to windows, this maybe change, and the games will be Open GL-only.

Depends on how DirectX8 will be, if its good then that will win, if not then its OpenGL

I hope it's OpenGL, but unfortunatly i think MS just might get this one and DX will prevail. ndee hit on a the money...if Linux becomes a viable gaming platform then the roles might actually get reversed. Right with full DRI and GLX support Linux has definitly most of its hardware interface in place, now it's just a matter of developers supporting it.
 
I hope OpenGL, DirectX is a purely political API.
Thats one reason to hope Macs do well in the future, since OpenGL will be the API of choice on the MacOS platform, as wel as on every other platform out there, cept possibly windoze.
 
Direct3D will win out, almost certainly.

Glide is dead, stagnant and archaic, it is no longer a player.

OpenGL would be dead if not for JC. Without him, OpenGL probably never would have been used as a widespread gaming API and with DX8 set to trounce OpenGL in nearly every aspect as far as gaming is concerned, its' future looks quite dim. Without Doom3 and its' engine, I would say OpenGL is also dead but with JC/id's support it will remain as it is today, a small player with a few huge hits to keep it in people's minds.
 
Guys, y'all gotta remember that Open GL is intensively used in the 3D Graphics world such as CAD and 3D animation..the reason Open GL was developped in the first place... so for sure its not going away..
 
FUTURE - Direct X (not because it is better, but because MS will standardize things)
CURRENT BEST - Open GL- Unfortunately it's a pain to program..... it's easier to use directX
DEAD- Glide is dead, say goodbye...

Well, being an eternal optimist(well not really, but sometimes), and being a Linux/UNIX/Amiga/Open standard kind of guy, I can allways ope that Microsoft and all their vile monopoly bull$hit ends up in the gutter where it belongs.

I hope that DirectX and OpenGL can exist together....give programmers a choice. Glide is certainly dead.

It would have been interesting if the Fahrenheit project had actually gone ahead and completed.....a merged OpenGL and Direct3D by the time DirectX 8 or 9 rolled around.....but alas it's not to be. SGI gave up and then Microsoft forgot about it....oh well. 🙁
 
I prefer both D3D and OpenGL for many reasons - and they both have their advantages and disadvantages. I like playing UT in D3D, and Quake3 is strictly OpenGL. I love 'em both.

OpenGL will probably be the future, at least I'm guessing.
 
YU22's right. OpenGL as Carmack said, offers the best all round portability i.e. Linux etc. so I guess unless the industry just forgets other OS's such as Linux OpenGL will exist. DX will however continue to expand and co-exist with OpenGL. Which is cool too.

Well, D3D just gets to be more and more entrenched. OpenGL just hangs on and eventually will continue to be used for a few games.

Unless OpenGL can be radically changed, D3D will eventually surpass it in everyway, virtually killing OpenGL as a Windows gaming API.
 
I think that Open GL will stay for 3D shooters, and still DirectX for more simulation type of games, I still think it will stay that time for a while to come. And yes, Glide is dead, I didn't worry about it two years ago
 
OpenGL, God helping. Alternatively, Microsoft could be &quot;partitioned&quot;, and Direct3D made an open standard, but OpenGL remains the more universal and consistent standard.
 
I'd say MOST games will be in Direct3D. Glide actually isn't COMPLETELY dead yet. 3 of the 5 games I play most run optimally in glide(UT, Diablo II, NFL Blitz2K). I'm sure it will die though, after reading the intial specs for Fear on 3dfx' website, I don't even think it will include Glide. So if that's true, then Glide will really be dead then, because there won't be any 3d cards that support it.
 
I prefer and hope for OpenGL.
DirectX will probably dominate.
Glide, gone. (Glide is just a cheap way of doing OpenGL)
