Poll: Get manual or automatic?

Well i'm trading in my GTO for a new car next month. I'm probably getting the saab 9-5 aero. I love driving manual.....most people hate it but i'd rather drive stick.

thing is, i really want a car with an auto start.....and you cant (technically) have an auto start on a manual. while i could just install it anyway....a friend of mine put his jeep through his garage b/c his wife parked it in gear.

maybe im just being a baby b/c its pretty cold here in NY and im jealous of everyones warm cars.

also to get manual its an extra $2.2k

what do you think?

My next car is definetly going to be an automatic. After driving a manual for the last 5 years, I've grown tired of it, especially in traffic. I'd like to get an automatic with sports shift. I know that the sports shift is nothing like a true manual, but it's still fun to me.

I've seen one person who just had to leave it in neutral when he parked and then it wasn't an issue getting a remote start, I could be wrong though, don't know much about those.

OP - Choosing between a manual and automatic is your choice, why ask ATOT? If you aren't sure, I'd say just get automatic, it would suck if you ended up not liking a manual transmission after buying a car.

I have remote start installed on my SI. Certain packages come with safeties... one of which requires your car to be parked in neutral.

But isn't that a given that u leave a manual car in neutral when you park.. unless you're on a really steep gradient... even still i just use the handbrake.

I Guess we just do it differently to u guys! lol

Getting the manual is MORE expensive? WTH?

Eh, whatever - I voted auto anyway. My drive is all traffic, with a kid in the car seat, so manual = annoying to me.

I've always been taught to park leaving it in gear, doesn't really put much stress on the transmission as far as I know.

my jeep's hand brake used to "pop"....one time rolling into a tree. so with that car i parked it in gear.

i just thought its illegal to have auto start on a manual?

They probably sell a lot more automatics and so manuals will be more expensive since they aren't used as much.

By sport shift you mean the paddle shifters where the transmission has the option to put it into a "pseudo" manual mode using the paddles? That'd be actually pretty fun.

I'm not sure about the newest ones, but automatic transmissions in 9-5 are *notorious* torque-robbing slush boxes.

I love my manual '00 9-5.

Also, I don't know how you'd do a remote starter. SAABs require the car to be in reverse before you can pull the key out. Move somewhere south of Northwest Territory.

You really should put it in gear if you're parked on a hill. Some people always put it in gear, even on a flat surface.

I've driven a SAAB manual and it is fine. Beyond that I'd look at some other car. Prices aren't that good and the interiors have a very cheap feeling. They did have some promotional leases running, but with the big downpayment required, they aren't as good a deal as it looks.

Do I understand this right? Autostart means you remotely start your car to let it idle? That is - no offense - idiotic and irresponsible. You waste incredible amounts of gas (here that would be finable btw). why dont you get a vehicle heater. For those it doesnt matter if it is auto or stick...

save 2.2k and get auto. Ask for the flex fuel engine, thats a big selling point for the 9-5 and e-85 fuel is making a big push into the north east.

I think the heating is more for the sake of the engine/car (also for people). That + block heater ftw.

Not sure about the new 9-5's but my Saab, which is 5 speed manual, you have to put the gear into reverse to take the key out. Saab has been that way for a while. So a remote start might now work in a Saab unless it is a auto.

Manuals are great if you don;t drive in bumper to bumper traffic. Here in NC (Cary/Raleigh) the traffic is not to bad most of the time so I like it. But when I was up in VA/MD near DC I just wanted ot get out and push the damm thing as my leg was killing me and I know I took at least a couple 1000 miles of life off the clutch that day.

That's why women shouldn't be allowed near automobiles... I don't see what this has to do with transmission type.

With an auto, the transmission is in park whenever you turn it off. A manual can be left in 1st gear, and if you do an autostart, the car goes forward.

I'm well aware of this, but the point is that she likely was told to park it in neutral and didn't.
