Why pay for POS PS3?.....Games on consoles are way overpriced and console games for the most part are hmmm crap compared to PC, so 8800 for sure or ATI .

Console games... for kids... THe exception is like party games like smash, mario kart, etc.... That's why Nintendo is good. But if you play Halo on XBox, sorry... you just suck. Play real shooters. CS:S FTW. Learn to aim.

I love these responses... 😀

does anyone find it a bit crazy at the price point we are at for ultra high end video cards? Its nearing half the cost of an entire PC.

Some people are willing to pay the premium for the top of the line product.

nobody is forcing you to buy....

Assuming that magicly my x1800xt can't handle whatever games I want to play any more, I'd pick up the 8800. That being said, realisticly, I don't think I'd EVER pay $500 for a video card.
Realisticly though, I will probably skip the next generation or two of video cards, and then buy a $200 to $300 card once my x1800xt becomes too slow to play stuff at high resolutions (1920x1200)

I will not be buying a PS3 ever, unless they go down to like $100 or something. Even then, I'd only buy it to install Linux or some variant of BSD on it and use it as a server of some type.

No. What I find amazing is how incredibly powerful today's GPUs are. MSRP has risen somewhat over the years, but not significantly so (gouging on release has certainly increased 😛) but the level of performance that $250 buys you today is incredible versus what it would have gotten you even a couple years ago.

There's always a premium for the best. And if I were looking at $600 for an 8800 or $600 for a Sony-DRM-Infested Console, I know which one I'd choose in a heartbeat 😀

The PS3 for the blu-ray and exclusives, it should last 4-5 years and that's a good buy for $600.

The cheaper GT version of the 8800 for $400 will only last 6-12 months but will be mandatory.

Huh, WTF? 😕

Mandatory, my fat ass. Are you (or nVidia) going to buy everybody a new PSU to handle this power-sucking PCIe leech? Current generation is best skipped. Wait for the 65nm(? maybe?) refresh this time next year, when the power and heat both come down.

OP, where's the "They're both overpriced" choice?

Personally $600 for ANY console is a bad buy not matter how you slice it,don't forget to add the cost of 4-5 years of PS3 games prices into that equation too,I can think of better ways to spend that kind of money.

PS3 and R600, until there's a folding client for nVidia based cards, no more nVidia for me...plus PS3 will have a folding client from the start.

As I live in Europe my money is very likely to go on the 8800gtx.

However as soon as a PS3 is available here in blighty I will most likely be getting one.

well its ultra high end. on ultra high end pc's with 30" monitors we are talking 4 million pixel display resolution.

all the ps3 has to do is 2 million for 1080p, but really its cheating and doing 1 million upscaled .. 720p upscaled to 1080p the way the 360 does it.(will after the patch). from what i've heard so far games like mgs4 are upscaled.

some mgs4 screenshots for ya...

I wonder if they will update the ps3's graphics at all or just leave it with the rsx, and since nvidia has recently went sli in notebooks, if they will do something like that with the ps3 or not?
@ Oroo, mgs4 is still in development its still possible for them to make it true 1080p before its released, and its easier for a console to use less to display higher end graphics since it doesnt have as much to do as a pc does.

I'll stick with my Dreamcast and Xbox and get two 8800s for SLI. 🙂 I LOVE my Dreamcast though! LOVE IT! I'll also love my XBox. 🙂

To those commenting on the power requirements of the G80 cards, where do you have your info from?

Are you expecting these cards to need much more juice than the current cards?

Or is it just that you think that current vid cards draw too much power as it is?

(I'm curious as I'm torn between going with a 7900 GTX or waiting for a 8800 GTS for a new build.)

8800G(T/S) will be replacing my aging BFG 6800GT. Might as well throw a Kentfield QE6700 in there too since I'll already be spending enough 😛.

Power and the NVIDIA "G80"

I also read on Anandtech, but can't find where, that nvidia and ati started warning psu manufacturers a while back about the power requirements of their cards to get more high wattage psu's on the market. Additionally I read that psu manufacturers are making psu's around 300w that are specifically to drive your video card and fit in a 5.25" bay.

Personally, I will also be sitting out for this round of gpu's since both companies claim the following product cycle won't be nearly as power hungry.

Neither. I'll get a PS3 when it has enough games I want to play. I would never spend that much on a video card. I bought a PS2 the day it launched in 2000. It still works fine and I still use it regularly. I'll be damned if a gaming video card ever has a 6 year usable life. That and the fact a highend video card will be a bargain bin item in half that time, while the PS3 will probably be in the same price range. Doesn't make much sense to pay top dollar now for something we know will be trumped by something better shortly and fall in price quite rapidy.

neither aswell. Newer tech is overpriced and buggy. Although I bet the PS3 will be alot more buggy then a new VC would be. I'll wait till prices are $199-$249 and is fully moddable(PS3). Which will be a couple years to come(the PS3 anyway).
