Gas again. No mess, no having to tend a fire, no smoke in the house. Just push the button and you have a fire.

gas logs are for wimps

real men use real fire

if you want just heat (the no mess comments), then just use a normal furnace

gas looks nice and is less messy.

however, it barely emits any heat compared to a wood burning fireplace.

I disagree, young grasshopper, the gas logs I have encountered made me leave the room they were so damn hot!

Although a wood fire is more fun, gas is better to have in the house. We simply wouldnt have 90% of the fires if we had to go get wood and start it up. Its just not worth the effort. However flicking a switch (or at my uncles house hitting a button on the remote) starts it up. Much easier.

half the problem with real fires is you open the flu up, and a lot of the heat escapces through it, while you get a ventless gas, it looks real, and all the heat goes into your house.

I bought Monessen Unvented Gas Logs from Dixie Products a few years ago. They use a remote control instead of a thermostat. They crank out heat like nothing else, and it's 99.5% efficient. They look pretty real, but you can hear the gas valve hissing. That would be my only complaint.

Real fires stink and take the home's heat right up the chimney. Not to mention dragging dirty, bug filled logs into the house... constantly. No thanks.

For heating purposes I would say gas....but guess what? my furnace uses gas so I don't need another gas "fireplace" to kick out heat. When I build a fire with real wood, it looks cool, it smells great, heck it even sounds great. I build the fire for the look and the atmosphere more than the heat, therefore I say REAL DEAL BABY!

Gas furnaces are all well and good, but forced air heat dries the air. Then you have to run a humidifier as well as the furnace. The bi-product of unvented heaters and gas logs burning is water! I generally have to use my furnace to dry out the air, because the gas logs and space heater put so much moisture in the air. Unvented gas logs:
  • Look good
  • Heat very well
  • Are very efficient, thus saving money
  • Don't smell
  • Add moisture to the air
  • Are very easy to use
  • Don't soot up the chimney
  • Don't send heat up and out the chimney
  • Initial cost is low
  • Don't have to cut, split, and haul wood, or buy it
  • Arguably safer than wood fires
You can always build a real fire if that strikes your fancy.

Gas logs are the only way to go. I have one and it is great. You just flick that switch and you're ready to go.

I'm now convinced people without gas logs are morons who don't know how to plumb a gas line to their fireplace! Guess they don't teach that in the Boy Scouts, eh?
