POLL: Gaming Forum Category needed?

Jeff7181

Lifer
Do we need a separate gaming category for all things related to gaming? I see so many post related to games in various forums... it's hard to figure out what forums a gaming question goes in.

"I want to play Far Cry, what hardware do I need for a decent gaming experience?" Does it go in General Hardware? Software? Video?

"Anti-aliasing doesn't work in Splinter Cell, can I fix it?" Does it go in Software? Video? Technical Support?

(these are not questions I'm asking, just examples of questions that don't seem to fit in any one category)

Even though this really is a good idea, it gets shot down all the time.

Oh, I didn't realize it had been proposed before... maybe what it needs is the ATOT effect? 😀

It would be nice if the people that voted No would actually post a reason why.

Even if they were to create a new forum, people would still post in the wrong forums. Look at SFF and P&N, for example.

That's what I don't get... how does SFF get it's own category, but Gaming doesn't?????

They have included a software forum ever since I have been here, and that seems to do just fine.

The person who makes those decisions likes SFF better than games.

(Read: You don't own the site so your opinion doesn't matter all that much.)

Believe me, I'm happy to have all these forums and I'm sure everyone else is too but to say AT is limited to hardware discussion only is a crock.

How do you explain the Operating System forum then? OS's are still software and always have been as far as I know... your reasoning is flawed.

Fine you guys are right. Just keep adding forums so that the traffic is pulled out of others making each forum even more dead.

I don't care either way since it is not a decision I or you have any control over.

Fine then, just take your ball and go home!

[delux247]It's not that hard guys.[/delux247]

the whole OS's vs Software thing....OS's are a little more than mere applications, hence their special forum. Games are much like any other software, you meet general HW requirements (listed on the box), insert the CD, download the latest patches and play away.

If you have a question that relates to anything to use a game historically it went into Software. If you don't get you answer there then trying another forum was the solution. I don't think many questions don't get answered there. Of course OT is a stomping ground for the odd game posting also.

As far as 'gaming' forums, for specifics I'd say all the manufacturers have pretty good forums themselves...if someone really wants an answer they should go there for clues.

I don't think anyone really cares about it but a small handful of people now posting about this little issue everywhere.

Show me the other posts... I haven't seen them, I want to see what they have to say.

go search you are not the first to suggest a 'Gaming' Forum...there is such little demand that your casting of Lvl 10: ATOT effect fizzled.

not that hard to comprehend there is no seething demand.

If you add a gaming forum, the following questions then belong in yet another forum:
I want to play Far Cry, what hardware do I need for a decent gaming experience?" Does it go in General Hardware? Software? Video? Gaming?

"Anti-aliasing doesn't work in Splinter Cell, can I fix it?" Does it go in Software? Video? Technical Support? Gaming?

It doesn't solve the problem, I think it just adds to it.

All those would go in gaming. if you have a question about GAMES, it goes in gaming. Why is that confusing?

Gaming aside, how many times do you see threads appear in the wrong forum?

Because you would have the same asshats now in Gaming say the above problem is a Video one, the asshats in Video saying that's Tech Support, and the Tech Support asshats sending them to Software and finally Software idiots says "It's a freaking game go to Gaming". 🙂

Somewhere along the beatdown you should be able to find a helpful answer and stop the agony.

perhaps if by gaming you include both computer gaming and offline gaming, such a Wizards games (D&D, magic) and wzkids games like Mage Knights, Mechwarrior minis, even classib battletech, then you would have enough distinction and reason to justify a new forum. I did have an interesting exchange about dnd with someone in OT yesterday. But there are other sites that have gaming forums, the question of having a distinct one for Aters is a decision that should be up to the mods. You don't see many non-computer gaming threads in AT.
