Both Blu Ray and HD-DVD are going to be able to offer higher quality video and sound later this year but which is it going to be?

 
Whichever doesn't let me down when it comes to production, cost and availibility.

The tech specs are both sufficent, so the winner will be the standard that is marketed best.

I quite agree on that. I would quite like SOny to succeed, especiallly given that it seems to have less compromises than HD-DVD. Still there is a risk that neither succeed and that would be awful.

Less compromises? I thought HD-DVD was the one that was easier/cheaper to create or something.
 
which one is not crazy with copy protection and other crap? Which one is more friendly to putting data on it? that one gets my vote.
 
meh, HVD FTW.

else ill wait to see which has its players drop below 100$ first. and the media like 2$ a piece. then it becomes interesting.

What about the 3007, it does doesn't it? Presumably the 2407 and maybe 2007 will too.
 
Ok seriously, none of us have tried this. All we have is a spec out (The Geforce FX 5800 looked good on paper!). How in the world are we supposed to know which one we would like more!?

Hello?

If you read the thread I pointed you to above ... they are discussing the necessity of having to buy
a NEW computer monitor or HD TV if you want to watch HD content from Blu Ray or HD DVD discs.

Thats why they are so pissed.

It is the monitor (computer or HD TV set) that has to have the copy protection hardware on-board
and is the arbiter of whether HD content from these new discs will be shown in HD.

These monitors/TVs with that hardware do not yet exist. You will have to buy them.
Apparently ditto for HD content off these discs via MS Vista.

Nice eh?

Who is that directed at. I know full well that i need full DRM support on a monitor to view full screen HD content in Vista.

My question to you is as above. How in the world are we supposed to know whether HD DVD or Blue-Ray is better when none of us has ever used them...hell 99% of us probably haven't even seen it.

The whole DRM thing is going to Blow-Up big time soon in the Media companys faces.

I bought the Disk or the file or next year the CRYSTAL
I should be able to do anything I want with it EXCEPT give it to 10,000 people I don't know
Use it in my car, home, plane, train, living room, bedroom, or even while walking down the street
I buy the file from ( lets say ) napster, what happens when Napster goes out of business like Everyone does, given enough time.

Can I still play my file then ? Nope
