POLL: Fullscreen or Widescreen DVD's?

Well it's heartening to see the poll results.

But as some have already mentioned... the real answer to this poll is OAR, which stands for original aspect ratio. Personally I don't want to see a move originally filmed in 4:3 exhibited in 1.85:1--reason being it would require chopping off the top and/or bottom. Same reason I don't want to watch something filmed in 1.85:1 (or god forbid 2.35:1) exhibited in a 4:3 window--doing so requires chopping off picture information from the side(s) of the picture. And chopping a movie up is like blashphemy. Liken it to cutting off the top and botom of the Mona Lisa just so you can fit it in that square frame you've got laying around. Just say no.

So even though I voted widescreen, the key here is OAR.

Yes, actually. For instance, Stanley Kubrick wanted his movies shown 4:3. Plus there's always the TV series that go to DVD like X-Files, Simpsons, anime, etc.

TV series are OK, that's what I said OAR - Not everything is filmed in widescreen, & that's OK.

But if it was filmed in anything but 4:3 they damn well better not chop it.

Yep, I was just pointing out examples. But what do you feel about movies where it was filmed 4:3, originally presented in the theaters widescreen, but the director prefers the 4:3?

I like kubrik's philosophy... film it in 4:3 and crop it on the top and bottom for the cinema, then preserve the original 4:3 for home video / dvd.

The still do sell "some" dvds with both aspects, usually wide on one side and fullscreen on the other.

I enjoy widescreen though cause there's just so much more to see.

They are dropping it because of all the crap extras they put on there and charge more for. I just want the movie in OAR dammit.
