Poll: Fuel Filler Door Should Be On Which Side?

One of the current topics reminded me about a Caprice I recently saw, with 'spinner rims' on it. I was putting gas in my car when I saw this fellow putting air in his tires. I noticed the chrome rims, and was surprised to see one start to move. I had my camera, and was about to ask him if I could take a picture, but he had gotten in his car, and was impatiently waiting for someone to finish pumping their gas. He was also blocking the path for the other car to leave, since it was facing the wrong way, due to the fuel filler being on the wrong side. I decided not to bother him, because I was just going to take the pics for laughs later anyway. I could see he was going to be getting even more frustrated in a few minutes.

I'd like to know, whose bright idea is it, to put the filler on the passenger side? Makes no sense to me. It requires you to drive against flow of traffic at the pump. You have to walk all the way around the car from the door you climb out of. It's hard to watch the pump, if you decide to get back in while it's filling. WTF is the point?

I like it because you don't have to worry about hitting your door on those pipes and other crap they have. You can pull up close and not have to worry.

I prefer the driver's side, but in my Plymouth Sundance it was passenger side, and there was one benefit:
At those gas stations on divided highways where they require everyone to keep their car facing the same direction, I very rarely had to wait in line!

I've owned quite a few vehicles, but NONE have had the filler on the wrong side. A couple had it in the middle under the license plate. I used to pump gas 25 years ago, and always preferred the filler to be on the driver's side.

Of course, if you do that, you increase the risk that you will accumulate static electricity and may spark the gas fumes when you reach for the nozzle.

It should be random. If all cars had it on the same side, only half the gas pumps would be used. At least that's what the dumb blonde thought . . . :p

What tends to happen over here is that larger ones have it on the right and smaller ones on the left, so overall it about balances out for filling stations. Simple but effective, and anyway, it'll do you good to get the few extra yards walk around the car if it's not on the driver's side!

That is only true if the gas station only has costumers from one side of the road. If people come into the station from both direction then it is best to have the filler one the same side.

Either side, but an industry standard arrow should be adopted for the fuel gauge that indicates which side the fuel filler is on.

I have autos with FF on diff sides, it makes me crazy

The randomness was obviously done for the reason stated above... only 1 side of the pumps would be used. It's true, because there are stations that can be entered through only one way from the flow of traffic.

With that said, I hate having it on the right... my truck is on the right while the Accord is on the driver's side. I'd rather it all be under the license plate like they used to be and the problems would be over. Why did they change from that ?

I get a new car usually every 2 years. Had 14 since '88. Rent cars frequently for the hell of it.

It really doesnt matter to me which side its on - the fun part is finding it first time on rent cars.

... or just make the pump hoses longer. Why not - the slack when not in use ?

They should be on the passenger side because it's what I'm used to ;)

I have two cars. One has it on the driver's side and the other is on the passenger's side. I sometimes get mixed up and pull up on the wrong side depending on which car I'm driving.

Really though, I could care less which side it's on.

Its actually a JDM carryover for a lot of Japanese cars. On RH drive cars, it is on the drivers side.

I like the behind the licence plate way, b/c that way you can go to either side of the pump. on the downside, don't get rear-ended.

On my 95 Pathfinder, it's on the left. On my car, it's on the right.
I guess each manufacturer puts the fiiler on the side that will be most economical to them. So, for that reason, i don't really care which side it's on.
