Poll: FSAA worth $80 to you?

Last week, when the ti4200 was $125 I would have easily picked the Radeon 9500np over the ti4200 for only $35 more. But now, it's not so easy of a decision.

DO you think the 9500np is still worth it -at this point?

Just an FYI, we won't be able to see the comparison. You'll have to post the project ID for each result (total of 4) for us to see the difference.

FSAA worth $80? Does this mean you are considering going to upgrade your sights to a 9500 Pro? Well it depends, sure the 9500 Pro is clearly better than a Ti 4200, not only by FSAA/AF, but by being more future proof, most specificially with its DX9 support. Otherwise it really depends on what you want from your video card, what video games you play and any games you intend to play in the near future...
 
I think he's referring to the 9500np being $160 and the current price of a 128MB Ti4200 at BB/CC/CUSA being $80.

Also, if you post your e-mail addy, I believe its possible to compare to all your published results. Not sure if you want to post your e-mail addy here though unless you have a major spam blocker. 🙂

In my opinion 9500 np vs ti4200 I'd prefer ti4200. Sure the 9500 np might perform better when FSAA/AF is enabled but you've just saved yourself major dollars for two cards that performs pretty close. If it is 9500 Pro vs ti4200 then I'd say 9500 Pro. At this point of time talk about price and performance it is the 9500 Pro. Great result under FSAA/AA and its only 10-20 dollars more than a 9500 np.

I'd thought those $80 4200s were 64MB boards...
 
I'm just trying to decide which one to sell. I'm leaning toward keeping the 9500 (hacked to 9700) but with the difference in video card price I can make up for in ram or dual channel P4 motherboard possibly. But I think I'll just stick it out with the 9500 since I bought it already. Thanks for all the opinions.

Hacking the 9500 np is gamble and doesn't necessarily work. Even if it worked you cannot assure if there won't be any other problems in the future. Based on what most reviews had say there is no problem at all because they're the same board as 9700 just detuned. In my opinion I am unwilling to perform the hassle and take the risk. These words are the exact same advice that I received which in turn changed my decision about getting a 9500 np. Instead I got the extasy 9500 Pro. Only difference? 9700 Pro is 256bit while 9500 Pro is 128bit. Not a big deal to me.

No, the vanilla 9500 is generally inferior to the Ti4200 in most situations and I doubt it would be faster with FSAA applied. If you truly want to upgrade you should be looking at the 9500 Pro or faster.
 
I would say FSAA is not worth $0.80.

The only situation where it improves rather than crappifies the image quality is output to TV. In general the picture looks much better WITHOUT FSAA.

That is certianly an opinion, one I'm sure many would dissagree with.

How does it crappify the IQ? Maybe you only used Quincunx...
 
Remember - you don't just get FSAA with a 9500, but DirectX 9.0 compatibility as well.

That said I think good FSAA performance is definately worth $0.80, however I don't know about $80...
 
I think is is worth it.

You buy the best video card you can afford.

ATI's fsaa makes game look much better, so if you can aford it then go for it.

No regrets.
 
I choose to save the money. I sold my Radeon 9700 Pro and went back to a GF4. I play most my games at 1600 x 1200 where I found FSAA had a very small effect on image quality.
 
I've found max detail options from within the game itself to be much more important than any AA or AF settings you'd gain from a faster video card. If you can run max details at your desired resolution with your current video card, I'd say upgrading is not worth it.

I'd have to say yes...

After becoming accustom to using AA all the time, I had to turn it off in Splinter Cell due to the AA bug in night vision, to compensate I upped the resolution to 1600x1200. It looked like utter crap. <------ I never thought I would hear myself say "1600x1200 looks like crap". 😀
 
i have numerous rigs in my gaming center and prossesor and ram and chipset aside i have just about every video card from gf2 mx to radeon 9700 np ill list them in order not by performance but by value starting from the top

aiw radeon 7500 ocd to 7500 default clocks $100 even with remote and tv
9500 pro ati
raedeon 8500
original radeon 64 vivo
gf2 mx 440
gf4 ti 4200 with 64 meg 128 version is a waste (slower and more money)
gf2 mx 400 or regualr same performance
radeon 7000

and all of my systems have the same moniters and to tell the truth most of my customers cannot tell the difference between any of the cards except the radeon 7000 which is a shame on ati and the gf2 mx which are sub par by todays performance
