I hear many socially accepted and politically correct views being repeated as fact, both here and other places. I'm just curious if people think that the current politically correct view is 'right' and 'true' on any given issue. I'm not going to cite any particular issue here and if my question is ambiguous, sorry. :)

[Edit] I answered that some are, some aren't. [/Edit]

I thought this thread might be an interesting one to discuss PC thought, but then I read the post and realized that there isn't a person on this board with enough empathy or intelligence to make any sense of it...

Ooooo very good question. I put this in the same vein as I put ancient philospher's, mathematician's, and astronomer's views. They believed what was currently true - most of which was eventually disproven. I don't doubt for a second that many (most? all?) of our PC views will change as society dictates.

I don't answer things based on political correctness, I base them on whats in my heart. And I really think most people do too, I don't think most people answer things because its what they should say. I think instead, people are more tolerant and understanding of those around them, and of others lifestyle choices.

Now saying someone who is in a coma is vertically challenged, thats just crazy, not PC. ;) I gues what I am trying to say is that most of what is labeled as being PC is just people saying what is inside of them, not because of what society says, but because we have moved forward.

It turns out I may have either the empathy or the intelligence - I just needed a minute to let the rusty wheels in my brain spin a little...

I am going to go the NON-PC route to answer your question. If for no other reason than to jump start the debate.

Is a little boy with Trisomy 21 special? Is he mentally challenged?

Yes and yes. He is also retarded.

To my mother, I am special. To your mother, so are you. To his mother, so is he. Calling him special is patronizing.

Is he mentally challenged? Of course. When I took advanced Organic Chemistry so was I. We all have our mental limits, his are well below normal. In other words, his development has been retarded by his condition.

Trisomy 21 also carries with it physical manifestations that will stunt his growth and ultimately shorten his life. His physical development is thus retarded too.

Kids with Down Syndrome rarely grow up to be fully self sufficient adults that their parents do not have to worry about (all parents worry, but you get the point).

The bottom line is our little boy is a retard.

However, this term has come to have a derogatry meaning and thus has fallen out of favor and more specifically come under fire from the PC police.

Fair enough. But to the people who want to call him mentally challenged or special, I say you are almost as bad. You are using nice but inappropriate euphemisms to label him.

He is a boy with Down Syndrome. And to anyone who knows him, he is probably a very special friend despite his mental and physical challenges.

I hate being politically correct, and I think this poll is gay :)

A lot of political correctness only serves to perpetuat racism and seperatism. Why is it that one person or group can think they are so special that they can label themselves as different from the rest of society and get special recognition and treatment because of it? Why is it that society is continues to allow this? Isn't the whole idea of being 'equal' being looked at and treated the same? Wait, that's my rant on affirmative action. But I guess it can apply to political correctness as well.
