"In the question period someone asked about student deferment from the draft. Kennedy said he was against it; he could afford to send his children to college, but otherscouldn't, and it was unfair. 'There was hissing and booing,' recalled Senator Fred Harris, who had accompanied Kennedy. Kennedy said to the audience, ' Let me ask you a few questions.' How many favored student deferments? Resounding cheers from students. How many favored escalation of the war? The vast majority raised their hands. 'Let me ask you one other question,'said Kennedy. 'How many of you who voted for the escalation of the war voted for the exemption of students from the draft?' There was, said Fred Harris, (who supported the war) a 'giant gasp'; then stunned silence; then overwhelming applause."
