Alrite, so imagne this situation:

There are 3 other guys living with you (you are a guy) there are 10 dishes in the sink. One person claims 9 of those are his. After much prodding to clean them damn dishes, he finally obliges...and proceeds to clean HIS dishes...and leaves the one lone dish/item in the sink.

my objection is that you have the fricken water running would it really kill you to wash one extra item? especially if no one else is claiming it? Usually, if im washing the dishes...i will wash everything in the sink just to clear it out...why leave one or two things in there rite?? ARGG

Yes. I mean seriously, if he washes one you never know, you might expect him to wash two because "hey it won't kill him" and eventually you will have a breakdown of the separations between all of you in your dorm/apartment/whatever.

Get your GF to wash the dishes;)

Seriously, if it was me, I would have washed that other dish.....
But since it wasn't, and it didn't get washed, stop b!tchin about it.....It's more important to get along with your roomates and have fun that argue over a few minutes doing dishes.

EDIT: I can't spell.

Of course he should wash the damned dish. But he's not going to, and you shouldn't expect it. You should assume this is how roommates are going to act.

well the thing is im only kinda peeved cuz no one is claiming this one cup that is in the sink right now. and the fact is that at the beginning of the year, i cleaned their dishes no matter how many were in their just because the sight of a dirty sink irked me a little bit. I did this for almost half the year hoping that the favor would be reciprocated...but no...and not even a thanks when i did do their dishes...arggg

Looks like you picked a crappy roommate. If I'm already there I will go ahead and wash all the dishes. No point on leaving some unless he hates you. :)

You know you could have had that dish washed and dried in the time it took you to post this poll.

Why did you room w/ them again if this bothered you last year? Guess it didn't bug you to much just wash the stupid dishes I am sure it will be less effort than you getting all stressed and bothered over it.

i roomed w/ them because i ddin't know about this when i started living w/ them and its a one year lease on an apartment so i can'r really do anything...at least after i bitched at them once they actually WASH their dishes...before, dishes would sit in the sink for months before they would get washed....hence the roaches crawling around the sink...

Hmm, same boat as me. I just wash everything thats mine, and everything else, I move it to the side. We have this two-sink deal, though one half of the sink is filled with soda cans (dont ask, I dont drink soda), and the other half, filled with nothing but dishes. So, I eat something, rinse plate and other tools used, place in dishwasher. Run dishwasher when full.

Or you could just give up and buy paper plates and plastic forks.

And yes, sometimes I just cave in and go "F*CK it, it smells and there are ants, need to clean." I don't know what makes people so lazy.

I used to help wash whatever was in the kitchen sink while washing my own stuff, and then telling them about it later, but I guess everyone started taking things for granted so now I don't bother anymore.

If there is one piece of advice I could give...it is that subtlety NEVER works. I have seen dishes pile up in one basin, then the other, then makes loops around the outer sink before any of my roommates would think about doing the wash. And we even had a dishwasher!

If you don't mind the roaches, just buy your own set of plates and cups and just tell the other cats to wash what is theirs and you will wash what is yours. Of course, you can be sure the dishes will pile up...and probably piss you off anyway.

The other thing to do...and I wish I would have thought of this years ago...is give each roommate only ONE plate and cup and one set of utensils. That way they have no choice but to wash their own damn stuff.

*shudders* remembering roommates in college.

by "other people" I assume you mean "people who aren't related to nor romantically involved with you", correct?

Oh, and I like how you bitch about "no one washes my dishes, everyone should wash my dishes, they shouldn't leave dishes in the sink, blah, blah, blah..."

All this after you let dishes sit in the sink for months, to the point that your kitchen is now infested with cockroaches, because you don't think it's fair that you should wash other people's dishes.

I used to have a gay neat-freak roommate.

He was felix. I was oscar.

Now I'm stuck cleaning up after my wife. What goes around, comes around.

Easy. Stay with people you konw and if you're lucky, you have freinds staying with you that understand common courtesy. I got lucky. :) I also plan on moving in with my gf some time in the future, so then dishes won't be a problem at all. hehehe....

A tactic that used to work in college is this: if you don't clean your own dishes they end up in your bed. It worked pretty well, especially vs guys who made pasta.
