Poll: for older bands / artists: individual albums or compilations?

Just wondering. I need to start rebuilding my CD collection again - it got stolen about two years ago, and I've just started buying CDs recently. I listen mostly to classic-rock type stuff, so I'im wondering what to do...the individual albums would probably cost more, but then you get some neat stuff that might not always make a "Greatest Hits" type collection. Then again, you probably get a lot of garbage, too - I always hear people complaing about having to buy an entire CD and they end up liking only a few songs on it. So what would you do?

Mostly I'm wondering because I've got a new toy to play with - bought a big CD changer to add to my little HT system, and need the CDs to fill it up 🙂 if you have any albums or artists in particular to reccoment, let's hear 'em!

Nate

For the classics, you neeed the original item. If it's just fluff, then a compilation will do.
Example, I'll buy disco compilations simply for party music, but rock and jazz get the originals.

For some artists greatest hits records are great since the albums weren't very good aside from the hits. Others you really need the whole thing. My contributions:

Bob Seger - Against the Wind
Rush - 2112

I figured this was going to boil down to "depends on the artist / group" - that's why it's not in the poll 🙂

Yeah, it depends on the band.

My suggestions:
Rush - Moving Pictures (in addition to NutBucket's suggestion of 2112  )
Motley Crue - Decade of Decadence
Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?

Good luck rebuilding your collection.

It depends.

If I were going to buy something by Abba, I would get the greatest hits.

If I were buying Jimi Hendrix / The Beatles / Rush / etc, it would have to be the original album.

I would love to see some of the older hard rock/metal music remixed from the original master and then made into a box set. I'd love to have the old metallica, pantera, iron maiden, etc released in high resolution.

Abba Gold is a classic in itself🙂
