So i am going back in a few days... Renting a big a$s house with a bunch of kids, not too far away from campus. Just want to see who liked the "community" of dorms, or freedom of houses. Oh, its not a Frat house or anything.

I rented with 4 other guys for 2 years, and it was a lot better than the dorm. Cheaper housing, got off of that crazy school food, and I could actually study. Definitely the house.

Dorms suck. Unless you're a freshman, and even then they still kinda suck. But you do meet a lot more people in them than in your apartment.

I lived in the dorms for the first two years. This year, I'm living in an on-campus apartment and so far, it's much much better.

I'm staying in a private dorm.

University Towers in Austin, TX

I am sharing a Two Bedroom, One Bathroom Style A with 3 people. I know it's not as comfortable as an apartment, but dorms are where you meet people. Plus, I am as close to my classes as I would be if I lived on campus. Works for me.

Once you get a house, you will just shake your head wondering how you put up with the dorms for as long as you did.

I rented a house with two of my best friends, and my girlfriend. It was a MASSIVE victorian home with hardwood floors, three bedrooms, a basement, a garage, a nice screen in porch, ect. We paid a massing $595 a month for it, and we were less than a mile from campus.

Cheap rent, and the over abundance of alcohol were about the only things that made Dubuque, IA liveable :)

Dorms rule if your dorms are actually good. Especially for me since there is NO super strict rules (their only rule about alcohol is that they ask you to transport it in its original container when going room to room, but no one even follows THAT), all the rooms are privates and decently sized (not huge, but about the same size as one of my other friend's dorm that he has to share with a roomie), you have your choice of floor (male quiet, male non-quiet, co-ed quiet, co-ed non-quiet...I chose co-ed NON-quiet of course!), and the food is actually pretty good :Q There is girls EVERYWHERE. I am a 2 minute walk from my classes.

Best of all it is non-stop fun.

I suppose its more or less what kind of dorms you live in. Here in UWashington, the quality of the dorms has a very wide spread. The one I'm living in next year is close the an avenue with a lot of restaurants (decent ones I may add) and grocery stores. Its also a modern complex thats more spacious than the one I lived in last year (also FASTER elevators).

Overall, its cheaper than an apartment (the room is definitely smaller on the downside), right on the school campus, and you definitely cannot beat the Internet access :) without spending hundreds a month.

It also depends on where you live. If its a rural middle of nowhere college-town, than an apartment would be nice. Otherwise in a city environment like mine, it costs about $1300/month to rent an apartment (1000 sq feet if you're lucky) and $200/quarter to park your car in campus (and on-campus parking is RAFFLED off).

.

That is good and bad.

I worked third shifts while in college and found it VERY VERY tough to get any decent sleep during the hours of 11:00 AM and ohhhhh 12:00 AM. Moving off campus got me the peace and quiet that I needed when I wanted it.

I was in dorms for my first two years, shared houses and apartments for the last two. I'd recommend trying out the dorms at first -- get to know the lay of the land, the campus, etc. without the worries of self-sufficient living.

hey dexvx, uw eh? you gonna be in terry/lander i'm guessin?

yeah, it's mostly preference of where you want to stay at. apartments will give you more room, but here in seattle they are insanely expensive. and since most of us are computer users :Q, getting hooked up to a phatty internet connection isn't a bad thing at all (5000d/8000u according to dslreports).

i'm gonna be in the dorms for the second time this school year. < 10 minute walk to any class, the people and pretty much unlimited bandwidth convinced me to come back.

house is nice, but dorms are the best.

While youre sitting in your house, kids on campus will all be hanging out and drinking. Not to mention the senseless acts of sex that go on when you live in a coed dorm building.

On a serious note, it is good for study groups, since people in your dorms take the same classes as you.

Right BD2003? where are you?

Going Terry. The upload is very impressive indeed. Its on a 10BT connection, and you can have no problems fully saturating it. Just as long as you dont get thrown in the dungeon or in a 3 person room...

House.

We get to say "hizouse", which you can't do if you live in a dorm.

And the T-1 to my desk is nice. Heh.

The dorms are great for meeting people but are just too strict on rules and too expensive

An apartment with less rules and a little less mingling

overall my dorm experience was one of my best years of my life

I was in dorms for my first year (req), house 1st semester of second year, apartment 2nd semester of second year. I'll be back in a house for the third year 1st semester, then I'm off to Scotland. Then I'm going to have a tough time deciding during my last year :)

Try 'em all out, they all have their advantages and the environment for each of them is unique.

Where you live is not quite so important compared to who you live with.

My three living experiences were all good because I had some great friends in all three situations.
