Since installing Win Me, I've had problems shutting down my computer. Sometimes I would get a GPF, sometimes just a blank black screen. Oddly enough, I found a fix by updating my mouse drivers. I'm using a Microsoft mouse with IntelliEye. Good luck and I hope this fixes your problem.

If the shutdown in Win ME doesn't work, don't worry, leave it on, do some cracking or seti@home for Team Anandtech . Don't shut it down, problem solved. ;)

Interesting, a mouse driver update did it? hmm

By the way Paulson, i never really liked that book. My ex-form teacher used to read it to my class duing Career Guidance periods. Really aided the muggy summers. More like bedtime soup for us. :D

Just an update. The mouse driver was one of the problems, but there are others. Before the update, one of ten shutdowns would work. All others would lock up the computer. Now, about six of ten shutdowns work, but the other times the system still locks up.

That's your idea of a "fix" ? If it's still doing it, it's not a fix.

Wish I could and maybe when I move back to the city I will be able to do this, but out here in the country I can't depend on the power remaining on. And yes, I do have a ups, but the way power goes up and down out here, I burn up a lot of equipment if it stays on all the time.

Well, I thought it was. After updating the driver the thing shut down just fine. Several time in a row! It hadn't done that at all before the update.

Just so you know, there was some problem with Windows ME shutting down on computers with fast processors. Something about the hard drive data getting corrupted because it didn't have the chance to clear the cache/buffer or something.

This may be unrelated, but keep that in mind anyway :) Might help in the future.

I have a problem with Win ME Shut down too.

I've isolated it to only one scenario. When I play Myth II interactively. Something about the connection that is made between my machine and the game host machine seems to remain somehow.

Sux. Wonder if there will be a fix in my lifetime, or more appropriately during the lifespan of Win ME.

There were two major shutdown problems I am aware of. The one with fast computers (actually fast processors and ATA100 drives) started with Win98, and is also in WinMe. If you don't have an operational ATA100 drive you shouldn't have this problem. If you do, you can download the meata100.exe file from Micron.

The other was with WinMe and Detonator 3 drivers. The newest driver (6.34), which I believe is still beta but can be found everywhere, has solved this problem.
