i personally think its idiotic. First off the name is just stupid, it sounds like some highschool football team or something.
Second they completly ditched any name recognition, so people they were looking to convert wont even know whats going on...


Two good alternatives i read on slashdot: Browzilla (play on mozilla, people will know) or just plain Mozilla Lite. Either one of those are tons better than Firefox...

You say that like firebird had some kind of name recognition beyond tech geekdom. Guess what, it didn't, and techies aren't gonna be duped by a name.

It's true. Firebird only meant something to people who were in the know, and although I agree that the Phoenix -> Firebird -> Firefox switching is an annoyance (why didn't they get it right the first time?), it certainly is not going to doom a good browser like Firebi, um, I mean, Firefox.

yeap. We went to go see it when it came out. i was in awe at the plane. Made me want to be a fighter pilot (most little boys want that though eh?). though it did also get me into takeing flight school =)

They want the name to represent their speed and FireFox is perfect for it? alternative: FireBunny? FireAnt? FireChetaah? FireFox will do just fine.

Who cares what it's called? This new version is feature-packed and is 10x faster than IE6. I can't believe how fast the pages load.
 
I have already filed a claim with my insurance company to deal with my bills from the mental anguish that this is causing me.
I cannot believe that they had the nerve to go from a bird to a fox. I mean, really, wtf. I named my 2nd born son Firebird because I knew that he would grow up with a name that is known worldwide as the standard in Internet browsing. Now, he is going to be known as a has-been, a cast-off, a smashed McDonalds cup thrown by the roadside, cigarette butts scattered around, drunken hookers stomping on it.

Why god, why?
