I just finished replaying Far Cry 2 in about 14 hours. Nine years later the graphics still look absolutely stunning:

I think this version of Dunia is one of the finest engines ever made. It ran fast at release, runs fast now, and always looks amazing. I played the game with everything on full 4K @ 8xMSAA on my 1070 with a constant 60FPS. Contrasting Crysis released a year earlier, I have to run it with no AA and some settings on medium to get similar performance.

I generally avoid open-world games but I’ve made an exception with this one as 14 hours is extremely reasonable, and the main story takes you to almost every major map location. Also the game is DRM free on GOG and weighs in at only ~3GB.

My main gripe is the sorely limited fast travel system which required excessive driving. I think they should’ve made it so unlocked safe houses also became fast travel points.

This is my favorite Far Cry game from the series.

Are there any decent graphics mods for it?

I remember loving it, but I haven't played it since.. damn.. probably near release. I obsessed over it for a year. Beat it a few times.

I've been afraid to go through it again in fear it wouldn't look as good as the newer Far Cry games and it would diminish my memory.

That said, Dunia and CryEngine were very similar engines at the time. When Crytek and Ubi split, Ubi got Far Cry and the engine code as it was at the time. That's what became Dunia. IIRC they didn't do too much to the engine at first, and mostly modded it to accommodate FC2 (ie fire and stuff)

Far Cry 2 was my least favorite because it strayed so far from the first game and you ended up with the best weapons at 1/4 through the game.

The realistic things in FC2, I think really made it special, like the gun jams, the in-game healing sequences (digging bullets out), the fire propagation, and of course the setting. The always reinforced checkpoints were retarded, and the game world was small in general. Far Cry 3 is a better game overall, but FC2 did so many things right and made you really feel the Heart of Darkness vibe it was going for. I wouldn't mind revisiting FC2's setting, but I would want a much bigger world, bullet physics, and perhaps a bigger push for exploration and item finding, moreso than FC3.

I haven't played FC4 or Primal, so I have no opinion of them. The original deserves to be considered the best based on the merits of the standard it set, and I still play it every now and then.

I would agree that Dunia in FC2 certainly felt like an upgraded CryEngine, specifically the version of CE used for the original Xbox Far Cry games, since that was in essence what it was. The PC version
of CE used in the first Far Cry doesn't have global shadowing in the game, and enabling every object to have them in the editor doesn't exactly work the way you'd expect. The original Xbox Far Cry games did though, however, the shadows are blocky as **** and of course the game was redesigned around the Xbox's limitations and a much more limited 640 x 480 resolution. Far Cry Instincts Predator on Xbox 360 is certainly the best way to play those games, with much improved graphics.

I think I'll take the time to address the Wii's Far Cry Vengeance release. First of all, I can't express what a disappointment that was, being an unpolished, unoptimized mess. I'm understanding in that
there was no realistic way it was going to match the Xbox Far Crys' level of graphical quality but obviously Ubi could've done much better. And of course I'll give Nintendo some blame for releasing a system with such shitty specs, all for backwards compatibility, and the excuse of "not wanting to compete with dinosaurs". These things said, it certainly gives insight into how bad Far Cry could've been on the Gamecube and PS2, as Far Cry Instincts was originally intended to be multiplatform.

The PC version had unlimited quicksaves.

As for the game world, I think it was too big. I avoid open world games mainly for this reason, but I made an exception with Far Cry 2 as in 14 hours you'll be taken to almost every map location, so you're not missing out significant parts of the game.

Personally I think it needed to be bigger, and not so compressed. Looking at the limitations of past gen, I can see why it would've been unfeasible. However, I would've made some major changes to prevent
the "symmetry" and the overly run down look of the world. Regardless of how ****** parts of Africa are, I think the game missed an opportunity to show the differences in how rich some areas can be (behind gates and guards that is) compared to the run down and more primitive places. There should've been
a larger settlement somewhere as well, to really show off what African urban warfare truly is like. The main towns didn't feel big enough.

Voted for 2 because for me it holds up better today compared to the original. The first game had an absolutely ridiculous difficulty spike towards the closing stages of the game, overcoming it was more about luck than anything else. The combat in FC2 was the best, the only thing that I dislike about it is the broken AI scripting.

FC2 had some major quirks to it, but I still voted it as my fav. FC1 was the alternative, and it was tough to pick which one I liked more. FC2 won out simply because of the gun store mechanics, and the supply run missions.

Loved 3, 4 and primal, so bought 2 after reading this thread. First time I've ever requested a refund for a game. The mouse input is ridiculous. Maybe it approximates controller movement with the mouse, or something. You can actually feel the mouse slow down when you mouse over an option. No idea.

Curious whether anyone who played it did so with a mouse.

I voted Farcry 1, but that is because that is the only game i played of the Farcry series. I like games with some sci fi or super natural elements in them or detective style. Farcry 2,3, 4 and primal are just not appealing to me.

I voted 1. Loved it, and enjoyed my time playing it.

Played 2, hated the repetition, story, and environment. Graphics and physics were fun though.
Played 3, Didn't care too much for it and didn't play more than an hour. Seemed boring and the same ol same ol from 2.

Haven't played any of the others.

Far Cry 5 confirmed: https://www.polygon.com/2017/5/16/15647196/far-cry-5-pc-ps4-xbox-one-ubisoft-the-crew-2

The rumor is that it'll be set in the Wild West.

I've finished it three times and had no mouse problems. Did you run the game with a capped framerate?

No capped frame-rate. But the problem was immediately noticeable from the menu screen. The mouse felt like crap, and would decelerate when you approach options. Then I start the game and two of the gunmen are glitching out into each other and over a fence, in a constant teleport loop. Didn't even bother to get off the jeep. That s* ain't normal. Wouldn't recommend. Looking forward to 5 though! Played and replayed 3 maybe 5 times. 4 a couple, and primal once, so it's not like I was going into this not hoping to enjoy it

Latest teaser trailer confirms 'Hope County' Montana setting in what looks like late 1800's or early 1900's (by look of a church).

There's also rumors that it will be set in modern-day Montana with the villain being the leader of a religious cult - which would seem a bit more likely based on the Ubi teaser.
