My Sony comes with factory 90 labor / 1 year parts. I don't know If I should go back and get the $40 2-year mail-in via fedex (no cost) for any defects the camera may develop within the two years of the warranty. Does not include neglegence/ abuse.

Did you guys buy an extended warranty / peformance plan for you digital camera? If yes, tell us what it covers, cost & duration and the value of your digital camera.

I did. I figured 4 years extra warranty for $65 on a $800 was a decent investment. Besides, if the camera...uh ceases working in 2 years time, I either get a replacement of equal purchase price, or my entire purchase price back.

Not a bad deal at all if I do say so.

Exactly. The camera mysteriously stops working when a newer better camera comes out @ same price.

Take advantage of the protection plans...though the extended warranties are often of little value. Especially Staples replacement stuff, since you never actually return the product, everything "breaks"...and you get paid...:)

Hey I asked around and maybe this can be helpful to some of you. Oh and being neglegent means: droping the camera, improper use, water damage etc etc.

(Duration/ Cost/ Description)

PCMall
2 year $40 You mail in through fedex. Takes 3-5days for replacement/repair.
3 year $50 Same

Staples
2 year $59 They don't take well to user neglegence.

BestBuy
4 year $59 Bring in to Any Best Buys for servce. They tolerate some user neglegence.

Fry's Electronics
2 year $59 Bring in to Fry's for repair. They tolerate neglegence even more than Bestbuys.

CompUSA
2 year $89 Bring in to Compusa. They will replace /repair anything regardless of neglegence.

I got a 2 year warranty on my Olympus D-40, can't remember if it's replacement or repair though.

I bought one but I don't think it's worth it. It costed $90 for 3 years but it doesn't cover much.

I am not aware of a retail store's plan which says you don't have to return the product.

Nowadays, I just use a platinium card thich has warranty extension.

I sort of wish that I would've. My first Olympus started acting funny and wouldn't read the SM cards at about 11 months on the 1 yr manufacturers warranty, so I sent it in. They couldn't fix it after 3 tries, so they gave me a new one. The second one was fine for a while, but now I have stuck or dead pixels on the ccd in low light situations that weren't there before. Oh well..

Yea, i got 4 years on my Olympus 2040 from Circuit City. Retail value of the camera was $450 at the time...not sure how much the service plan cost but I got it for half price :)
