This isn't a question of ethics.
This is simple economics.

When I played Motor City Online people were selling in game cash on eBay and it became a big argument with the developers whether this should be allowed or not. Personally, I think it's just fine... but... it's against eBay's rules, because the game's EULA states that every part of the game is the property of the company who made the game, and eBay's rules say you can't sell anything that doesn't belong to you.

Ah. Yeah I would be against restrictions on this type of stuff. I don't play these types of games but I think that we should try to keep a hands-off approach to this type of stuff- simply because it's going to happen anyways. It might be difficult to enforce people not giving up cash in a game or whatnot but I guess that's a risk that comes with buying that type of stuff on Ebay.

Personally I would never do it- but as long as SOMEBODY out there wants to pay money for that crap, go right ahead. its your money.

Technically, it's your property. Why not?

No... technically it's not your property. If you have an MMORPG read the EULA.

Well you are selling it within the game. Not like Verant or Sony or whoever loses the "money". You are being paid to transfer it to someone else within the game.

You'd have to be a chronic user of heroin to think that this isn't ethical. Whether it's a good use of one's time or not is not at issue. Ethically of course it's fine.

Of course. You worked to create a character and its items, why shouldn't you be allowed to sell it if you choose.

As mentioned above it might not be legal for many games, but it's still ethical.

It makes sense that a MMORPG publisher should prevent "farming" though. Perhaps they should allow sales but on a strictly limited basis like "2 characters or item sets a year" or something like that. If accounts / characters had tracking numbers like for Dell PCs it could even be safer for buyers, since they could easily check that the sale is not from a non-existent or hacked account.

Ethical ? It doesn't come into play when you're dealing with video games. Let them do what they like.

The legality of it isn't in question... it's flat out illegal, no question about it. I already know that.
But people in MCO had such strong opinions about it, I figured I'd find out what the general opinion of it was here... looks to be that most people are fine with it. Horizons... here I come =) MCO paid for my digital camera, maybe Horizons can pay for my NV40 in a few months 😀

as long as the items stuff charcters were acquired legit and not with hacks or cheeks i thin its borderless prints all round ethical.

Of course it is. I mean, if you really want to buy a sword or whatever, and I want to sell, what is keeping us from making a deal? It's not like you don't know what it is, and that you're not getting anything that's real.
