I recently started using emacs and it is great! I have never seen a piece of software that is so universally powerful for the things it can do. What do you guys think?
 
Started using Emacs on a SPARC over ten years ago. While there are a few rare cases where I tend to stray away (if a particular IDE offers a development advantage), it still remains my editor of choice.

Number of users here seemed to agree.
 
Are we talking Windows or Linux? If we're talking Windows, I have to say THUMBSDOWN in favor of UltraEdit.
 
emacs reminds me of the old WP for DOS. It's really nice and very fast once you know all the keyboard combos, but until you know them well it takes forever to do something that would take 2 minutes in another text editor.
