POLL: DVD burner choice

Yeah, yeah, I know, I should get a dual-format, blah blah, full compatibility, etc etc.

Reality check - I can't afford one. The only reason I'm looking at a DVD burner is because it's just above the price of a DVD/CDRW combo drive.

So lay it down.

"Poll bump" - wish FT4 posted the thread AFTER the poll was done. Prices are all pretty much the same - the first two are equal, the NEC is $20 more.

What price (ceiling) are you capable of spending?
Now that the 8x drives are coming out, 4x should be starting to drop.

Hence the poll. 😛

I've heard that as long as you use quality media and not Billy-Joe-Jim-Bob's Med-Yuh For That Thar Comp-Yoo-Tar, either standard works pretty well with most set-top players.

Edit - Right, price ceiling. Nothing more than what I've listed. I don't need cutting edge or Super Hyper 8876234x Burn A Disc In Five Seconds speed. It just needs to be reliable and compatible.

Thought I mentioned the low price. Guess not.

CDN$150 for the first two, CDN$170 for the NEC.

Pioneer A06 $167

So you see, I think you question about -R and +R are kinda moot a this point, as prices for the dual match your prices for the single.

Except you got a poll for the best dual burner now.
😛

the plextor seems nice. but it's not 8x dvd-r, only 4x. that's disappointing. it's only 8x dvd+r. the pioneer A06 is what i'm looking at. also, supposedly pioneer has the A07 coming out in december with 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD-RW with the same 8x DVD+R and 4x DVD+RW. at least that's what i've heard.

oh? Is that that place where they play with all that pretty monopoly money?
😛

From the Yahoo Exchange, his limits are $110 and $130 USD. For $17 CANADIAN dollars more, our merc for hire can buy a dual burner.

get a DVD-R they work in most normal dvd players

I've always been a Toshiba fan when it comes to opticals. They read everything and I've never seen one die.

Yahoo shopping blows dead goats for quarters.

Right now, it's standing at 4 for the Toshiba, 3 for the BenQ rebadge, and 5 for the NEC. And there's only been one comment on + vs -, which is what I asked for - /hands  to Ameesh - I'd also heard the -R was better for older players. I was pretty sure I'd said that I didn't care about dual-format, maximum compatibilty, etc. Oh right. I did.

Anyone else on the subject of + vs -, or am I going to have to start a new thread on that? 😛

From what I've heard (and I don't have any actual statistics), +R is more compatible with DVD players. My DVD player is only a year old and plays everything..
My preference is for +R/+RW simply because formatting is a lot quicker for +RW, and +R seems to be more compatible. (My friend was able to get +R to work in his 5 year old DVD player that wouldn't read CD-R, CD-RW, Dual layer pressed DVDs, or any kind of other DVD writable media).

NEC hands down. Toshiba, and, of course, Benq suck bigtime. I got a Toshiba DVD/CDRW and it's a horrible drive, the worst I ever had. NEC rules in drive department.
