Poll: Dumpster Divers

This morning as I took my trash out there was a man going through the dumpsters behind my place.

Alright, I know people do this all the time, but what are you supposed to do about it when you catch them? Sure you are throwing it away, but they are on your property (renters property in this case) going through your stuff.

What would you do?

Let them continue on with whatever they are doing. As long as they are taking stuff from the trash and not breaking into cars/apartments, I don't care.

They sometimes drive up my block - doesn't bother me at all.

If someone can make use of something I am tossing out - good for them (In the grand scheme of things isn't that better than whatever it is going into the landfill?) When you set items out to the curb for disposal, doesn't the fact that you are discarding the item(s) mean you no longer have any use/want/need for it(them)?

If you are just tossing it to the dump, why should you be concerned if someone has a use for it and takes it before it goes to contribute to our ever-growing landfills?

Once it hits the curb, it's public.

If I throw something away, and find out someone took it out of the trash to use it, good for them (as long as it's not personal info)

The only thing that would upset me is when they make a mess. They take stuff out, but leave trash all over the place, and don't put things back like they should be.

I'd run him off. It's not the "stuff" I throw away I don't want him to have (he's welcome to the junk I throw out). But I don't want them pulling out credit card applications and stuff like that.

When I was in college, I had to take my recyling to some bins across town. This one time I was out there, and I guess I wasn't paying attention and I put some newspaper in the "textiles" bin. All of a sudden, this hippie dude pokes his head out the opening and says, "actually, dude, this is for clothes. newspaper goes down there." Scared the shiznit out of me. . .

I tear cc apps, etc. to pieces before tossing.

They are welcome to anything they can find.

When I worked at starbucks we were supposed to dump bleach in the pastries before tossing, (ostensibly to make make them unpalatable to rats.) There was a crew of us who would take them in a bag and hand them out to the homeless on our way home. It's hard to believe how much food gets thrown away, when there are people starving in this country.

A shredder is your friend.

Bought one recently after seeing a guy that doesn't live in my apartment complex not only in the dumpsters, but opneing bags and removing papers. Even though I always tear to pieces my checkstubs and "bill part" of CC bills, I don't do as good a job as a confetti shredder. 🙂

we always throw a little used cat litter on top of our garbage to discourage "recyclers"
since they can't seem to put the garbage they take out back in our garbage can.

Especially at a recycling center... I know some dumpster divers that go to my recycling center for box tops or whatnot. Most of the other places, scrapped = destroyed beyond use. I know a lot of people dumpster dive in Blockbuster or malls, but not in our area.

What would you do?

As long as they can keep the trash inside the dumpsters and not spread it all over I have nothing against dumpster divers. I'd just leave my trash and go on with my life.
