I don't know about you guys, but I'm a college dude and I do a lot of bicycling when I'm drunk.

There's just no safer way to get back and forth from parties while completley trashed IMHO... If a cop so much as think's your walking funny, there's a drunk in public and driving is completley out of the question. If you bike in traffic, DUI. Biking on the sidewalk is usually ticketable but it's rarley enforced on college campuses. I just think its interesting how its possible to be competley illegal no matter how you permute the situation.

any thoughts?

since you dont pose a significant threat to other vehicles when or pedestrians you are on your bike it should not be illegal

you can do a lot of damage if you hit anything with a car, not so much on a bike (other than yourself, but laws to protect people from themselves are retarded)

If you're drunk, just stay in one place until you're not drunk anymore.

biking is the only way to go when drunk. walking takes forever, and you cant always count on a DD.

parties get shut down. Do you really want to stick around to sober up while the party is being busted?

if you are drunk, do you think you could ride the bike safely? it requires more eyes-hands coordination & reflexes. if you keep this up, more likely than not you will hurt yourself one of this day. btw, i know people getting hurt walking or riding bicycle back home while drunk.

Threat? Define a threat please.
If threat doesn't include serious emotional damage to the person driving a car who hits and kills you because you are swerving across the road due to being drunk, then yes, there is no threat. Or if it fails to include your family of dumbasses suing the driver for killing you, because that's the way a lot of peoples minds work, then yeah, it's not a threat to any other vehicles.
Or maybe threat doesn't include you swerving into/infront of a motorcycle and causing the rider to have an accident because, well, motorbikes are vehicles, and are going to be more susceptible to hitting a road bike than a car is, and it could lead to the rider getting fvcked up if he has to swerve/loses control because of you and crashes.
Pedestrians are less of an issue because it's easier for them to move out of the way. But

If you're drunk then you're not hugely likely to be either: wearing a helmet, using lights, wearing safe clothing or riding responsibly. Given the way a lot of cars act around bikes when they are ridden in daylight with someone who's not drunk, at night if drunk, you're fairly likely to get creamed, so there is a lot of risk to yourself if you ride on the roads.

why don't we just make it illegal to drink!

seriously, I would think that cities would encourage people to do anything other than drive while intoxicated. You're still liable for any damages you cause, but it is a sign of social responsibility to bike/walk/skateboard rather than drive.

Of course, some individual responsibility would go a long way too. I.e., don't drink so much that you can't do simple tasks like walking and biking without drawing attention to yourself.

used to do it all the time, but it's bloody dangerous. A few times I woke up with big marks on my body and had no idea what had happened. Came off a few times which also sucks. I love my bike and hated the feeling of waking up wondering if it was scratched/bent/whatever.

Also, over here you can actually lose your car license if you're found to be drunk riding.

I've moved into town now and it's a 5 minute walk to the clubs and pubs. I have no need to cycle home thankfully.

I count my lucky stars I wasn't caught/injured/killed and I would really implore people not to do it.

I used to do it all the time in Sweden. Fell a few times as well and have a nice scar on my right palm from a spill. Shoelace got caught in the gears.....I've never laughed so hard in my life.
I do remember an acquiantence that was piss drunk and didn't see a rather large concrete block on the path used to prevent cars from driving there. He hit it and suffered some serious damage. I believe he lost most of his teeth and siffered enough facial damage to require a lot of surgery. Never saw him after that...

Oh that's gross. That is enough to convince me that drunk cycling is a baddddddd idea.

Any of the things you listed apply to even drunk pedestrians, and no, i do not consider any of that a significant threat. Not to mention you are just stringing along unlikely possibilities.

People on bicycles just do not often cause accidents fatal to other people, no matter what way you look at it. Motorists do, and thats why driving a car while intoxicated is much more dangerous.

You do not need a licence to ride a bike. You do not need insurance to ride a bike. you are not "driving" when you are biking. It does indeed pose a risk to other drivers riding drunk (been there done that) but the risk is significantly less and therefore it shouldn't carry the same penalties as a DUI, maybe something a little less severe.

I don't think you'd get a DUI, but maybe public intoxication or whatever that's called

I don't get drunk enough that I can't ride a bike. I have ridden a bike drunk though, not sh!t faced but certainly beyond the legal limit to drive a car. Never had a problem. I don't think this is really an issue quite honestly.

I have always wanted to ride a bike while puking...that will be quite a funny scene.
