Today we have some more threads resulting from alcoholic consumption.

Saying anything against alcohol would illicit some very unpopular responses, especially judging from the age bracket and attitudes around here... but I choose not to care any longer.

Let's set this up a bit... we always hear the bad side of things... never the good.. but aside from "feeling happy", what good does consuming alcohol provide ? Weigh this against all the addictive and other negative actions resulting from it (rape, drinking/driving, depression-->suicide). It doesn't take much effort to paint a picture against consuming alcohol without sounding biased. How do you vote and explain (especially if you feel alcoholic consumption doesn't need any more regulating).

my personal feelings on it, are if it's legal, pot should be legal...either that or illegalize both...wouldn't really bother me either way, honestly...i don't drink or smoke often enough for it to matter, really

but it tastes so good and is so addicting... I'm going to drink and I don't give a $#it what you do to me.

See how easy it is ? There's no such thing as better judgment when it comes to drinking.

The same could be said for many things. Look at how many people have killed in the name of video games.

I like to have a drink every now and then. I like the buzz, it really gives you a good feeling.
As for others drinking, learn your limits. If you cannot handle it, don't do it. It's easy to argue against anything, but sometimes you just have to say no more.

I thought about this with smoking. It's an addiction and nothing good comes from it (aside from feeling good for a bit). But it doesn't lead to the number of rapes and auto accidents as alcoholic consumption does. I don't think there's many things that "could be said" in the same manner... unless you can think of more... I'd like to hear it. Video games... bleh.

i generally stop at 2, 3 if ive had a huge meal or something or am taking a while at drinking it. ive gotten smashed only a handful of times, but never had a hangover: even if i cant walk straight i can remember to down a glass or two of water before i hit the sack.

i never cared for the feeling of being wasted to start with.

as for pot; i think it should be as legal as alcohol. ive met a couple of angry drunks...and never an angry stoner.

i hate smoking, so its something ive only done maybe 3 or 4 times, and never really enough to get a buzz, but just enough to calm me down and let me relax. the first time i smoked was eh, 2 and a half months ago, last time was about 3 weeks ago, i gave the rest to my brother, since hes the wake-and-bake type of guy and is rarely seen without a buzz i figured at least someone should get some use out of it.

i don't usually drink during the work week unless we have company. on weekends, it's quite common to see me completely wasted. i would say that one weekend per month i have a 4-alarm hangover on a Sunday. these are days which are spent on the couch and very little else.

drinking is fine by me. hangovers suck but it's usually worth it.

edit: drinking is ok imho - because... it loosens you up and gets conversations going
...it is nice to have wine with a good dinner
...panty remover (possibly)
...good times - social settings ice-breaker?
...sometimes it brings about those rare buzzes where everything just feels perfect

i would say that if someone NEEDS to drink to have a good time, or just to escape reality, then they have a problem. if you're doing anything on a daily basis, it might not be good for ya.

not many responses as to why they feel it's all ok. Is it just a simple "fine if you can control it" ? If so... you can see from DWI statistics that obviously not everyone can control it. At what point does it become "ok now we need to do something about it because not everyone has control like me" ? Or would you rather not let them ruin it for you ? Not a loaded question... looking for straightforward answers. "I don't care so long as it doesn't affect me" would work too.

A well made oatmeal stout is heaven in a glass.

Some people actually do drink because they enjoy the flavor.

Drinking budweiser = smoking a marlboro or camel.

Drinking a very well crafted stout = smoking a very expensive cigar.

These people aren't doing it to get drunk or for the nicoteine fix...they are doing it because they like the taste the item provides.

Easy for you to say. When people get drunk, they don't know WTF they're doing.

I can make anybody pretty.
I can make you believe any lie.
I can make you pick a fight with somebody twice your size.
Well, I?ve been known to cause a few break-ups,
An' I?ve been known to cause a few births.
Well, I can make you new friends, or get you fired from work.

And since the day I left Milwaukee,
Lynchburg an' Bordeaux, France,
Been making the bars lots of big money,
An' helpin' white people dance.
I got you in trouble in High School,
But College, now that was a ball.
You had some of the best times you?ll never remember with me:
Alcohol; Alcohol.

I got blamed at your wedding reception,
For your best man?s embarrassing speech.
And also for those naked pictures of you at the beach.
I?ve influenced Kings and world leaders,
I helped Hemingway write like he did.
And I?ll bet you a drink or two, that I can make you put that lampshade on your head.

?Cause since the day I left Milwaukee,
Lynchburg and Bordeaux, France,
I been making a fool out of folks just like you,
An' helping white people dance.
I am medicine and I am poison,
I can help you up or make you fall.
You had some of the best times you?ll never remember with me:
Alcohol.

Yeah, since the day I left Milwaukee,
Lynchburg an' Bordeaux, France,
Been making the bars lots of big money,
(Helpin' white people dance.)
Yeah, I got you in trouble in High School,
But College, now that was a ball.
You had some of the best times you?ll never remember with me:
Alcohol; Alcohol.

I drink and I'm probably addicted but it doesn't worry me. As an ex-smoker I recognize that little tingle in my brain when I start drinking as something my body has been craving

if you can't control your drinking then your drinking controls you. i.e. you are an alcoholic.

Damn, it only took two posts before someone suggested outlawing alcohol.

Get what folks? They tried that once. It didnt work. Matter of fact it made more problems. Try not to think in that direction. It seems nice on the surface, but it just makes the situation worse.

Same with the guns. It seems like a nice idea to ban 'em all and our country will be so much happier. But every nation that had guns and banned them ended up increasing their crime.
You can look inward for examples too.
The People Republic of California has a crime increase whenever they start regulating guns. But they never learn, so it continues.

BTW, the latest Republican govenor enacted a ban too. It should be known I am NOT a fan of republicans or conservatives. They are politicians first and foremost. Which means they are full of sh1t, and wont actually help people.

ANYWAY, enough soap-box.

Getting back to the current issue. If you look at places in Europe (where they dont have serious alcohol problems) most of them allow people to drink at an early age. I've heard lots of arguments for and against this thinking, but overall it seems to reduce the abuse of alcohol a lot.

Something for us to think about, as opposed to raising the age limit. (Which I think might make the situation worse.)
