I'm just wondering. I'm currently living in Michigan, which does not require safety inspections. Some of the cars you see driving around here are pretty scary (like their brakes may fail and go careening into you). I grew up in NY, which does require safety inspection.

Alabama does not. I was surprised that only a few years ago did they start requiring insurance.

Pennsylvania = yes.
Some areas of PA also require special emissions inspections.

In California, we only have smog checks. Your car can be falling apart, but as long as the carbon monoxide levels are low enough, and any aftermarket parts have a "CARB Certified" sticker on them, you can keep driving. Smog Checks are done bi-annually.

Ohio = no, although some counties may do an emissions check.

I lived in Missouri, where vehicle inspections were required. But you can always find someone who will pass it for a few extra bucks. Although they do have undercover inspectors that go around and check to see if an inspection place is doing inspections properly and legally. I briefly managed a repair shop, and when we got our inspection license, we were talking with the state inspector, who told us the previous owners (before they shut down) had been under investigation for selling inspections stickers illegally. Or passing cars that shouldn't.

I even had the owner a used car lot down the way approach me about inspecting their cars. Could send us business, if only we would fail a few minor items wrong on the car, and pass everything else. He was willing to offer a kick back on every car sold then inspected and passed. I declined on his offer, as we ran a clean and honest shop.

So I can bet you there are some unsafe vehicles running around in states that require inspections. maybe not as many as in states that don't inspect, but they are there.

Texas has both emissions and inspection check. They are both administered at the same time and both are nothing but a money grab for the state.

not very thorough in Louisiana... you sit in the car, they say " Lights, brights, blinkers, reverse lights, horn, and wipers"

they make sure you have insurance, registration, and $10 fee, then you get a new inspection sticker.

I saw something in the news saying that in bay area, they trying to pass a new smog check standard, which will make it harder to pass and more expensive to get the smog check done :(

Colorado - No saftey check some counties have emissions check, however if you spend $450 and it still exceeds the limits you pass. I you have a classic car, 20 yrs or older I think no check required.
