Poll: Does "the perfect rig" really need SLI?

This poll is just to see how many of us think that SLI is manditory in what *you* consider "the perfect rig". To me, a "perfect rig" is more like "The ultimate gamming pc of all time" and costs around $3000.00 to $4000.00.

Soooo...have t it. 🙂

What if you consider "perfect" to be cost-efficient and energy-efficient? I do, and would have to answer no to your question.

If you could care less about money, heat, and possibly noise, then sure two 7800 GTX's are better than one.

If you mean without any regard to money, than I guess so. I voted "No" because most people (ie everyone) could easily get by without SLI/crossfire. Only the super enthusiasts with too much money should even begin to consider it, and they really don't need it, just want it.

The "perfect rig" can mean many different things. SLI is necessary for the "most powerful rig," but certainly not the "perfect rig."

im asuming perfect means, the best right? well, sli or crossfire are cerainly the best. so yes. but i still think its a waste of money. if just nvidia and ait deciding that they can make more money by getting people to buy two cards instead of investing more time into making one completely kick @ss card.

If by "kids with no money" you mean "either kids or adults that prefer to spend their money efficiently" I agree.

Note that most people would say SLI is for "enthusiasts" and not for "kids with too much money" because most people don't feel the need to attack others that disagree with them.

the perfect rig would be one where you have enough money left to buy the next top end card which will deliver far better performance/features imho than two of todays top performers.

I would say a qaurd opteron, w/ 8gbs RAM per cpu, 2TB RAID5 array 25 15k RPM SCSI 320 drives, DUAL 7800GTX (if gaming), 16 Channel Mackie Onyx 1640 mixer w/ 16 Channel simultaneous digital FireWire mutlichannel recording interface card, Audigy 3 (is it out yet?), dual 16x dual layer burners.

Proly more...

I would much rather spend t he money on a really fast disk subsystem then getting the extra 2-3fps in a video game. IE, many scsi HDD's in RAID 10.

Bear in mind that "gaming enthusiasts" are a subset of "computer enthusiasts" as a whole, and as such, the perfect rig for you may be immensely different from the perfect rig for me. As I'm a photo and music guy, having two extremely hot graphics cards is a disadvantage in noise, and does absolutely nothing for performance.

My perfect rig would include a dell 2405fp and at 1920x1200 or whatever, you'd need SLI to run aa/af me thinks.
