POLL: Does a CD sound better than an mp3? (to you)

Can you notice any difference between a song from an mp3 (say 192kbps) , verses a regular CD?

I can't tell the difference between a CD and 320kbit MP3s. 192kbit/s can sound just as good as the CD, it depends on the music and the sound system.

mp3's always sound metalic to me. Like they're being reflected off of a piece of thin springy steel.

I did a comparison of the same song from a cd ripped at 96, 128, 160, 192, 256, and 320 kps.

I noticed a significant reduction in sound quality going from the cd to 160 kps or below.
I noticed a slight to moderate reduction in sound quality going from the cd to 192 or 256 kps.
I thought the sound quality of the cd and the song ripped at 320 kps was close. I suspect this is somwhat dependent on the song.

This was done in a fairly quiet room using a two satelite and two 12" sub-woofer speaker system driven by an 100 watt\ch Sony receiver. This systeim is not true audiophile quality where a speaker system can costs $10,0000. But it is better than the best self powered computer speaker system I have heard.

In my car, it seems to me that a song ripped at 128 kps sounds better than the best FM reception I have gotten.

At 256kbps and up is hard to tell the difference, it's possible with really good equipment.
I rip my MP3s at 256kbps and they sound great.

on my equip, i can't tell 192kbs+, but 128kbs? i can tell on 5 dollar headphones.

I can tell easily 128kbps in my truck (the bass isn't nearly as clean or deep). I encode everything with LAME --alt preset standard. Sounds just as good to my ear.

mp3 ripped at 192? yeah, cd is better. vbr is the only way to go when ripping to mp3s
