OK - so we all know this isn't very scientific... but I find myself wondering how many of my fellow AT'ers that do DC (must keep it on topic mustn't we?) were, but aren't now working in IT. Or weren't and are now, etc...

Having gone from what I mistakenly believed was a solid career to where I am now... I'm wondering how many survived... :(

edit:
Dang! I wish I'd thought of a way to attach age to each question. Oh well, it should still prove somewhat revealing.

Hmm.. looks like I'm in good company. :)

Edit: Of course that was never really a question given that I'm a member of Team Anandtech. ;)

Only way for me to get a different job in my field is to move at the moment... nothing in Vermont... saw a couple of jobs in Rochester... I wonder who I know who lives there with an 'empty' basement? :p

Never worked in IT and kind of want to. This area is saturated with CS Master Degree holders doing low end tech support and help desk stuff so my little non-educated existence won't ever see the IT field.

I don't officially work in IT, but I do support three laboratories and all the PC's therein. I'm also the webmaster for my companies intranet and administrator of an enterprise-level software system...but technically I'm a "senior chemist", lmao, funny, huh? I also build/repair PC's "on the side" at home.

Guess I kind of fall outside the scope of your poll, lol.

I guess I was in IT and still am. I'm in the 21-30 age range. I'd love to get out of it, but I don't see that happening. I'd still be doing a lot of the same stuff for fun, even if I wasn't working in this industry. :p

I'm not sure I qualify but I voted I was doing IT on 9/11 and am still and am in the next to last age group.

This last year I actually paid more out to programmers than I took as personal income.
I think that's a good thing, like sowing seeds - the harvest is what you look forward to.

As the owner of the company I find myself doing a little bit of everything since I have no employees - only contractors. One benefit to this situation is that there are a lot of great programmers out there willing to do piece work @ $50 / hr who used to get 2 or 3 times that much. I can't resell their time for much more than that so I don't make much to cover overhead, but it feels good to keep some guys doing what they love and letting them make a little money at it too.

No IT for me

I'm an electronic design engineer working for the company that designs those cramped cars ( :p ) supporting the software group with designs/builds/testing/support for systems to simulate transmissions to test their controller software without running grandma off the road with their brilliance.

-Sid

PS: Thank you for letting me slip into a non-old fart group (barely  )

I was, then was downsized Nov. 2002, took 9 months to find another IT job at a 60% loss in pay. I've had to take a part time job to help pay the bills.

Any IT jobs here still have about 150 to 200 applicants.

I'm near the high end of the next to the last age bracket, so about the only way I can get a better paying IT job here in town is if I network and find a buddy in a position to hire me.

Murphy's Law:

The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the fabricator and impossible for the serviceman.
