I kind of think we need it, but than again, I don't think USA has any such enemies with such capabilities as to launch an ICBM at it.

Give me a specific system, and the specific cost.
If the question is: Do you want missile defence "no matter what" then no.

no, not now anyway. this proposed 'missile defense system' is a joke.

CBS story

The most outspoken critic, Ted Postol, said Kadish's system is doomed to fail. "Spending resources on doing serious scientific work on problems that are related to the ballistic missile defense problem is a perfectly appropriate thing for the United States to be doing," said Postol before the July 8 test.

"But we're not doing that. We're building things that have no chance of working instead," noted the physicist and MIT professor who was formerly a top U.S. Navy scientist.

"We analyzed at MIT the Patriot performance," explained Postol. "And our analysis indicated that the Patriots probably did not destroy a single SCUD warhead. Probably, the performance was zero."

After Postol's analysis, the Pentagon sharply lowered its estimate on the Patriot's performance.

"Because if this system doesn't work, millions of people would die. This is a system that's supposed to defend people from nuclear attack. And if it doesn't work, lots of people would die," Postol said.

I would have to say no, since it violates the antiballistic missile treaty, which is a treaty the US helped to enact. We (US) say we're all for disarming bombs and nuclear weapons and we say we're all for disarmament, but it's such a lie. How do you think other friendly nations will feel if we're able to construct something like this? I'm sure they're going to feel betrayed and misled.

I'd much rather see the funds, which will be in excess of trillions I'm sure, used in a non-isolationist and peaceful manner. But then again, I guess I'm not privy to the secret politics of the world. Although, I hardly doubt any country would dare to challenge the United States on a grand scale.

Bin laden probably doesn't have sophisticated delivery systems (re: ICBMs) for any nukes he has. If he wanted to hit the US, he'd have to fly/drive it over here. This alone is reason enough for the US to beef up it's border patrol and airport security.

boy, i honestly don't know about that. it appears bin laden has pretty deep pockets (billions?), although i have no idea how much these things run. anyone know?

Definitely not. Not unless they're expecting pple to attack them.

I don't think he has billions, but hundreds of millions. As to the cost, are you referring to the nukes or missile delivery systems?

I think that if the US wants the missle defense system then it should give up all their nuclear arsenal. What other countries are afraid of is the US becoming safe from other nuclear weapons while they can still use them on others.

The technology itself is very good and I think that all countries in the world should make a contract of some kind that involves changing every nuclear weapon in the world to a missle defense system.

As soon as we get it working with 100% reliability. (IE never)

I'm extremely concerned that Tonga may launch a surprise attack against us, so much so in fact that I can't sleep at night and it's all just the military industrial complex to feed itself.

It would show a certain US arrogance if we failed to aknowledge the potential of our distractors to attack our country with ICBM's. And we know that more nations will posses the cabability to do as much each year, so every year that we delay getting something working just puts us that much farther behind the eight ball.

It sucks that the current system under development is so bad, maybe something good will become of this system, or somebody at the pentagon will have the forsite to pursue a more promising system of missle defense.

For the world to be truly safe from nuclear war any missile defense system that is developed and works needs to be given freely to every country in the world so no one anywhere can use missiles against anyone, this includes the USA.

Unsure.

If you're talking about a real working defense system, then I'd say 'go ahead', but right now the performance of this proposed 'shield' is so low that it closely resembles a sieve. </sarcasm>

Even if we had a perfect missle defense system why are we so stupid as to believe that will eliminate any chance of an outside attack? Was the World Trade Center attacked by a missle? How about Oklahoma City? If they want to attack us they will.
