I'm curious to know how many of you Windows 2000 users like and use the fading effects for menus and tooltips. And what do you think of the shadow on the pointer?

I have the fade effects working. They're pretty cool, but my only gripe is that they take too long to load. If they would load faster, I would love them completely.

When I first got win2k I was so amazed by them. They add a very nice effect to the OS. I don't notice them after a couple months of using win2k but I still have them on. I don't think they effect performance very much, at least not on a faster system.

Yes, I use the fading effects. They look really nice. The shadow on the pointer was one of the many reasons why I upgraded to Win2k.

I agree with everyone in that it is a kewl "gee-whiz" feature that makes the interface more enjoyable. I really like Win2Ks GUI more than any other Microsloth OS so I hope they don't fark this one up in Windows XP. Then again, I probably won't upgrade to XP until it gives me some really good functionality I don't get in 2000.

To turn them (the fading effects) on, go to Display Properties, choose Effects, and enable them there. (by checking "Use transition effects for menus and tooltips" and setting the drop-down box to "Fade effect")

Edit: Sorry, I forgot I was not on a true thread-based forum; the A.T. forums are much different from most USENET clients :)

Is there any way I can get some of these effects on Win98? I have a Win95 machine that has a 3D mouse pointer but when I installed win98, i forgot to add the 3D cursor set theme. can i also download this off somewhere?

You can't get the effects we're talking about here in Windows 98. The 3D mouse pointer you're talking about is just a custom cursor scheme, which should be on your Windows 98 CD. (which you should have ;-)

I really liked the fade effect at first, although I have kind of forgotten about it. And the shadow is a nice touch :)

i love both.

NOTE TO EVERYONE WHO SAYS THEY TAKE TOO LONG: If you have TweakUI, you can speed up your menus. I have 'Fading Menus' and they pop up really fast (instantly, almost), but still fade in.

Also: the technical term is 'Alpha Blending', and is capable of doing alot more than fading menus. Basically, from what i know, it means that the GUI has the ability to slowly change one pixel from one color to another by taking the two colors and incrementally changing hues between them. Example: If your desktop is red, and your start menu is blue, and you click on the start menu, it will change each pixel in that area slowly more and more blue, slowly turning purple, and then even more and more blue, until all red is gone and it has arrived at the 'destination' color (blue). This is a big thing, i think. Win9x has no built-in ability to do this.

But i am no expert, thats just what i have concluded on my own.

I installed intellipoint software and seem to have lost the shadow on my pointer, any idea to turn it back on. No option in the control panel, just usual flat/3D.

Peace

I can't stand the fading menus, its like a pet peeve of mine, any machine I setup the first thing I do is turn them off cause it bugs me so much.
