Why do you want to? I'm in school, and one of my courses has us using Red Hat 6.2, working with Networking stuff and Internet stuff. Cool, but unless you want it for what it's good for, what do you want it for? I have had problems with the GUI in particular, things going awry.

Hell no. CLI has gone the way of the dinosaurs and the various window managers for Linux are just a sad and pathetic attempt to copy Windows.

I prefer to use my time actually operating the computer, not trying to get it to operate.

Then use Linux Mandrake 8.0 ;)

Even your mother could set up Linux using that distribution...

First used Linux in 1994, and have been using it on and off (mostly "on" the last 2 years) ever since. It's a hell of a lot more stable than any Microsoft platform.

The two main Linux GUIs have been making great progress recently. The latest version of KDE, in particular, appears to be quite nice. The old version of KDE that came with RedHat 6.2 wasn't nearly as polished...

I used to dual boot Linuex (Mandrake distro) with Win98 and it was pretty nice. Very stable and all, but the problem was that I had to keep Win98 for the games.
But ever since I installed Win2K, I haven't used any other OS because there haven't been any BSOD, no illegal operations, no lockups, etc... plus, all my games were compatible. Bash MS all you like, but Win2K is tough to beat...

Yeah.. or "no keyboard was detected, press f1 to continue"

and Linux isn't an evil corporation either.. yeah sure, anyone can use windows and all.. linux might be harder, but that's just the problem with the world.. no one is willing to do ANYTHING.. ppl just want to sit and watch as things go to hell and not care, cause they're nice and comfy with their stupid windows, beer, pro sports and porn..

I have Win98SE, Win2k and Linux Tri-Boot on my Machine.

I use Win2k about 10x as much as the other two put together though.

I really really like Linux, but at the end of the day Win2000 Pro can do everything I want it to alot easier than Linux, and while Win2k isn't as stable as Linux, it's certainly stable enough for a PC/Workstation.

I agree somewhat with this statement, but so many people have problems with their various windows setups and they all bitch about it, they might get their setups to work, after six months, and they are happy... But if they were to try Linux out, not get it right the very first time, they would say that Linux sux, all of the problems with windows are just gone from their minds.

I would say that it is harder to set up Linux, but if you set it up right, well then in terms of stability and performance, Windows has no chance whatsoever... Regardless of which numbers you put after the W...

I use and recommend Slackware, and if you can beat the price of a fully functional, very stable OS with all the office applications of staroffice 5.2 and KDE office, Abi Word and all of those other free applications, several free GOOD web servers, SQL servers, Firewalls, Proxy servers and everything else you can possibly think of (including the Linux PS, GIMP), then PM me...

I use win98se for games, Linux/Unix for everything else.

Just check the latest RedHat or Mandrake dist. . You get an incredible amount of software thats free. You can leave your system on for months w/out a reboot. As for using Linux for servers there is no comparision to any version of windows......

Yes, and we all know that Microsoft invented the GUI...

CLI rocks and Microsoft knows it. It's exactly why they added a telnet deamon to Win2k. Who wants to run bloated PC Anywhere when you go do stuff remotely using CLI and a 56k modem?

CLI will never die.

Well, some of the WM's for Linux look pretty much like windows, some look like Atari, and some look like Macintosh... Maybe they are trying to make it easier to understand the look for users of other less advanced OS's?

So what, does it matter? If you do not like that kind of WM, just get another... That's a good thing about Linux, instead of the code monsters from microsoft, you get a very small core and then you can gather whatever you like around it, every Linux installation will need the core, but everything else is pretty much up to the users choices...

Think about it for a minute, one single person controlls the actual Linux core, Linus himself, it really is that small, how many people are needed to update the core of the various W cores...

Not really, as a server OS it is a joke, yeah a big JOKE! As a consumer OS it is too expensive and too resource consuming...

Linux isn't there yet, but they are going up, way up... Soon we will see a lot of games written specifically for Linux THEN ported to W, now where would that put Linux's performance...

A whole lot of companies (Nvidia, ATI, Matrox, NEC and VIA) have already stated that they will start that they will develop optimized drivers for Linux themselves...

I know some of you do not want to face it, but Linux will eventually take over every segment of the MS market...

Speech on, brother PCResources, I gave you 10 for that :) I've been using linux at home since 1996 and I would NEVER go back to anything M$ offers! Using Windblows is like sitting behind computer hands tied behind my back. I like KDE 1 a lot more than any Windows and GUI under linux is NOT slower than under any Windblows. Best part of linux is it's endless tweaking capabilities: there's nothing even close to that under Windows.
