I am considering getting rid of my desktop and buying a nice lappy
Only hesitation is that I do some CAD work and teh larger screen is nice......

Just curious who uses desktop and who uses laptop.

Yes, I am sure many have both.....what is your main machine, or your computer of choice.
Mac users feel free to chip in too with your imac, emac, ibook etc.....

both.

desktop 60%
laptop 40%

If i could only have one id take a laptop though because the portability is quite nice.

I prefer desktop over laptop. However I never really use the laptop's portability because it weighs around 8 pounds with mouse.

If you get a laptop, get a nice one Apple iBook or IBM ThinkPad R or T series.

I'd stay with a desktop. You nailed one reason - a larger screen - but there are others, too; the biggest of which is probably the ability to customize/upgrade. Find a new program that needs more speed/power? Drop in a new CPU and/or a new video card. With a laptop you may be SOL...you'd have to replace the entire rig to get the performance increase.

Speaking of making a purchase - given two systems w/identical specs, the desktops are probably going to be a bit cheaper, especially if you get into the higher-end lappy's.

Edit: I voted For laptop and desktop, and I use my desktop much more. In fact, my laptop is sitting up in my girlfriend's dorm room so she can get out of the batcave and still get some work done :)

I also hate the bottleneck in laptops.

MOST hard drives are slow and noisy, 4200RPM.

Motherboard/RAM.

Small monitor vs my Dell 1900FP LCD.

Small keyboard.

No mouse.

Graphics card.

I could go on.

With wireless and a far far better display, lappy wins 95 percent of the time.

I mostly use my laptop w/ dual monitors. One built in scren at 1024x768 and one external screen at 1280x1024. I also have a desktoip machine, but I mostly use it as an MP3 player and to play games on.

That's one thing I love about the laptop. Other than the mouse, there are no wires. I like that.

Battery has a decent 2.5 hour lifespan.

WiFi card can surf the internet from anywhere within the house.

No power cords, monitor cords, keyboard cords.

When I had a nice laptop and a old desktop, I used the laptop more. Now I have a great desktop, and my laptop is pretty old. I only use the laptop in the library, or in cafe's. So I use the desktop a lot more now. Plus my laptop's only a p2 400, so other than web browsing, typing reports, music and chatting, I can't do much on it. Once I get a brand new laptop, I imagine I'd use it just as much if not more than my desktop.

Currently, laptop 100% of the time. Sold my desktop cause I was hurting for cash. However now that my job is back, I'm going to build myself a nice new system. I also do CAD work, I just use an external monitor.

I used to use the desktop only, but I soon discovered the joy of coming home to use a laptop with a wifi card while sitting in my recliner. Its a lot better for surfing and general work than spending more time in an office chair.

very interesting......

I agree with the mobility - I just switched to wireless and with a laptop I could get online anywhere

But also agree with the upradability of the desktop.....

Desktop at home, laptop at work (docking station though, so it makes no difference, really)
