POLL: do you turn off your car when pumping gas at the gas station?

I always have my servants fill my tank.

...yeah, anyway.

i turn the car off for two reasons, now that i have my new truck... one, it's simply habit, derived from the fact that it's not a good idea to keep the car running... and two, the little door over my gas cap has a lock on it, and i need the ignition key to open it.

makes the dicision real simple.

I've never even considered pumping my gas without turning off my car first. Who leaves their car on?! 😕

People that want to give the carjackers a little easier time. 🙂

Only reason to leave it on is in the cold and even then I'd be afraid to lock myself out by mistake and then freeze indefinetly. 😛

Always turn that sucker off.

Generally no. In the summer I like it kept cool, and when that isn't the case I simply don't buy in to the need to turn it off, so I save starter wear and keep it on.

I used to always turn it off and then I started to wonder why do I do this? I have not found the answer. If somebody can give me one, other than it's the law, then I'll be perfectly happy in turning it off from now on.

Where's the 'Yes, just because I always have.' option?

I'm not afraid it will explode and I don't do it to be 'courteous'...wth that means.

its curteous i think b/c you dont run the risk of exploding others that might be getting gas when you are.
i always have turned off the car.

How exactly would an explosion occur pumping gas? It seems to me that you'd have to hose down the hood of your car if it was running.

I turn it off as if I happen to go inside to pay I'd hate to come back out and find it...STOLEN!

And why the heck would it explode?? You smoke or rub pieces of flint together while filling up? 😕

Yeah really I want to hear why it would explode as well...

I pay with credit at the pump, so on the few ocassions that isn't an option I'll turn it off before going in to pay 🙂

It doesn't actually explode, but there are some nice videos of the car catching on fire due to pumping improperly. I've seen them on reality TV shows all the time, I'm sure a copy exists somewhere on the internet.

well to be honest i'd have to say you are a dumbass if you leave the car running..

i think i've seen that done once in my life.. i was like WTF?

it's just something you don't do.

i dont know why i do it, i have no explanation. i guess b/c the signs tell me to.
i was just trying to reason why courteousy was a choice.
now, the cell phone use while pumping gas, that seems rather....silly.
i cant imagine a cell phone igniting the gas.
maybe it can?

Yeah...for people who are complete idiots and shouldn't have been born in the first place. 😉

Ever notice how truck drivers leave their rigs running all of the time?

Probably from smoking a cigarette, or having static build up and not grounding yourself before you put your hand back on to the pump. I won't sit in the car while it's pumping, then touch the handle without grounding...

Still, I want to see how gasoline can magically ignite by itself...
what the HELL would you not turn it off for?
I'd have thought that was clear by now for some people: they want to keep the interior of the vehicle warm or cold.

Everyone I know turns it off, but really what is the harm in leaving it on.

That is actually a ..uh..semi-hoax. Stations started putting that sign up because it became "common knowledge" that cell phone signals could ignite the gas, which they cannot. However, if someone were to drop a cell phone that has a metal or partial metal casing..or whatever, it could cause a spark and blow something up. Also when you are on the phone, most people become inattentive..which could lead to improper pumping.
