Poll: Do you transfer your OEM XP license "illegally"?

Personally, I do. I'm not going to throw away a legally purchased copy of XP just because I change motherboards, despite the exact wording of the EULA saying this is illegal. I think the EULA just goes a bit too far and if challenged in court I don't really think it would hold up anyway. I figure as long as I own at least enough copies to have one license per running copy of XP, I should be in the clear.

Your wrong, and this is a piracy thread.

I took the screw the EULA vote, but that's not entirely accurate. I take a more liberal interpretation of what a new mb is. I'll move an oem copy between mbs of the same socket, but if I go to a new socket, I buy a new O/S. In other words, I had moved my last oem copy between 2 socket 478 mbs, but when I went to socket 775 I bought a new copy.

I have separate licenses for all of my computers and sometimes I do transfer them but I'm not going to repurchase an OS just because I upgraded.

"Other" - Explained:

Most of my PCs came with XP Pro pre-installed; a couple others I've transferred the license to *IF* the EULA terms allowed it. Read the fine print very carefully. Some EULAs allow for a "one-time transfer" with all rights, permissions, etc conferred to the new machine, and the old machine destroyed.

How would you even do it? Most OEM machines don't come with software.

They used to, but I think the question is more for the oem editions you get from NewEgg and such.

Yes some new pcs do not come with the cds. But you can usually opt to pay a few
$$ extra on purchase to get them. I know Dell allows this & given the choice I always
ask for them. They are after all, for all the programs you had preinstalled & you may
need them or the license codes later on.
