Poll: Do you think the Anandtech forums should allow pictures?

I think so. The mods are very strict and do a good job of keeping trolls away, incase someone should post something innapropriate. I know in the past there were major problems keeping trolls like these away, but not anymore with the banning of most freemail adresses. What do you think?
 
It has nothing to do with inappropriate pictures, and everything to do with traffic, or so I've heard; I guess when you try to imbed images in with the posts, it causes problems with this many users (and yes, I know that you aren't putting the image on the server...but it was something like that).

I agree 100% wholeheartedly...

I've been on numerous very popular online boards that allow picture postings.

and a few hardware related ones, namely ArsTechnica and (I think?) HardForum.

the last time pictures were allowed was over 2 and a half years ago (because they've never been here since I've been a member for that long).


I think its sad that the administration (mods don't make the decision) thinks so lowly of the members of Anandtech, that we are not "mature" enough to handle picture posting.

I've found myself hanging out more at Arstechnica whenever I have a technical question, especially about cases because the ability to post pictures is almost needed to get your point across.

I've offered suggestions on how to make it better, like perhaps you can only be allowed to post pictures if you are at least a golden member (prevents someone making a new account just to post porn or something stupid).

and for those that say "my connection is slow, I dont want to have to view the pics", it would be simple to add a preference in your profile so you don't have to view the pics.



I say "give us a chance"

btw it would add no extra strain on anandtech's servers, they wouldn't be hosting the images. the argument about "traffic" was saying that users didn't want to wait for big pics, but they could add a preference to choose not to view them
 
1. As long as they are under a certain size.
2. The originator of a thread could choose if pictures were on, off or available only for the originater to post
3. You disobey the terms of pix posting you lose the ability to post pix.
4. Not allowed in sigs. I have been on to many UBB's where everyone has a ani. gif in thier sig. It hurts yer damn head I tells ya!

lets get this done.. I think it would be highly benificial for the forums to have pictures
 
and I strongly believe that if you didn't gain priveledges to post pics before you turned &quot;golden&quot; or even platinum, that the majority of the problems would be gone.
 
all of these are good points made to help regulate the use of pics but it comes down to whether the forum software can handle these requirements...that may be what is holding the mods back because they can't have a middle ground liek your proposing due to the software...just a possibility

2) USER BANDWIDTH Consumption (NOT EVERYONE HAS 5556565656 Mbit to their home 🙂)
3) If you think that people won't abuse it, then you should think again. Do the math 🙂 42,000 users..and you think not 1 will abuse it and ruin the forums for everyone?. Not 🙂.
4) Forum Speed, wouldn't it be great to enter a thread with 9 pictures of someones car that are on a 14.4 modem connection from some guys house?. NOT

Most all of these reasons cannot be controlled, this is why we are NOT interested in enabling images 😉.

first off, once again I take offense to your comment, I never insulted the admins in any way. I appreciate the administration of this site, its WONDERFUL. You guys RULE. I stated my honest opinion, because its clear that the administration thinks the members aren't mature enough to handle it, and that is truly sad.

Other forums have this, with no probs. The anandtech homepage is covered with tons of images, and it loads fine on my home 56k. And like was said several times, a user could choose weather or not to view the images, like they already can under &quot;Customize&quot;.

Other forums have little problems. And obviously someone could easily create a dummy account just to screw around with naughty pics or something, thats why if only members that have earned their keep, with a higher member ranking, it would help with this problem

I think it would be a good idea as long as they weren't allowed in sigs and maybe a limit to the sizes/amt per post.

C'mon you're a developer! There's gotta be a way that users can switch off embedded pictures if they wish (i.e. if they have a slow connection). And as far as server bandwidth goes, just don't allow pictures to be served on AnandTech's servers (i.e just IMG links to outside servers). That way AnandTech's bandwidth isn't even touched.

As far as abuse goes, like somebody said, open picture-embedding only to a certain level of members (i.e. golden).

Val, that statement was not needed, and was simply put there to draw attention.. Moving on 🙂.

I'm not going to argue about this topic anymore 🙂 it's closed we have made it clear why, we aren't enabling them.
